This reminds me of the area around Bridgeport, California where they have thousands of sheep grazing that arid land. You can be driving down a dirt road and come across a flock of sheep crossing the road, and you're hung up for a good hour - not only because of the size of the flock but also because each and every one of those fucking sheep have to come up and personally inspect your truck.
My only experience was a little different. It happened when I was hauling logs across Sierra Valley, northwest of Reno. As I approached a herd of at least 10,000 the herder riding drag walked up and climbed on the running board. His exact words were "Put it in your lowest gear and idle through. They'll get out of your way". That's what I did, and in that 1/4 to 1/2 mile of driving through sheep I never had to clutch it once. They just got out of the way. It was almost magical.
ReplyDeleteIt probably cost me 5 minutes out of my day, if that, and it was a 5 minutes I'll never forget.
When I was stationed in Italy I rented a house on the outskirts of town and one morning I’m watching thousands of sheep coming down the road. Took about an hour for them to pass. Never saw anything like it. One old man and four Border Collies running a massive flock. Had about six donkeys with burlap saddle bags filled with tiny lambs. Felt like James Bond was going to come through at any moment being chased by bad guys. Eod1sg Ret
ReplyDeleteNone of those of course carry an ID.

ReplyDeleteI spent a great 6 weeks at the MWTC in Bridgeport. Had an absolute blast.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid I remember bringing the cows from an upper field right down the country one lane road to the barn for milking. Probably thirty or forty Holstein. Once in a very blue moon some city slicker would come along and be in a real hurry. One afternoon this moron got right up behind a cow blowing his horn and that cow shit. Ya ever see a Holstein blow shit? Twas a thing a beauty. She was my favorite from that day on.
ReplyDeleteMakes me think about the millions of sheep in FUSA

ReplyDeleteI ended up behind a cattle drive one time on a back country road in Texas when they were moving a herd between pastures by just walking them down the road. I thought it was kind of fun. When they cleared the road I told one of the guys on horseback "Thanks! I always wanted to go on a trail drive!" He grinned ear to ear.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mikey. I think I know just how that 'drover' felt and I'll bet you made his day!
DeleteGot stopped once while one of the local ranches was moving its herd. Just got off work. Popped a beer and watched 'em walk by, not much else to do.
