A hen that seems to be all the rage at the moment is the Black Copper Marans chicken. It’s a beautiful bird that lays extraordinary, dark, chocolate-colored eggs.
Although it has not been around that long (1900 or so), it has a fraught history with ups and downs and near extinction.
We added a BCM rooster and a hen to our flock this year. They're are 16 weeks old now and they do seem to be a bit more mellow in temperament than the American breeds. They are pretty pricey birds in the Pacific Northwest. Mama had to have them so I just went along for the ride. We added Brahmas too this year.
