Sierra Ferrell

Again, something a little different.

Over the past few months, the posts on Fridays at 8 PM have been concerts of classic rock or country. I'm not sure how many of you actually listen to the whole concert, so I'm just going to post a few songs from now on.

Another thing that's a little different about tonight's post is that it ain't classic rock or country.

Over the past year or so, I've found quite a few youngsters (to me, anyways) that are playing country or hillbilly music that's not even close to that pop country shit playing on the radio nowadays. One of them is a young lady named Sierra Ferrell out of West Virginia. She's a whiz on the guitar and has a great voice range and Nate Leahy, the guy that accompanies her on the fiddle, is pretty damned good himself.
I don't like everything she does, but the shit I do like, I really really like. Some of the stuff is her own material, but I've also heard her play Faron Young, John Prine and Flatt & Scruggs covers. Shit, I've even heard her do Dolly Parton. Nightclub jazz singing too.

Here's a sampling of her music.

And yes, I'm aware she has tattoos and ohmigod, a nose ring in the last video. If that bothers you, try closing your eyes and listening to her music.

  1. 2018 nose ring as you said. 2020 new manager pull the ring take bath, same good music.

  2. Just think of it (nose ring) as a modern day price tag dangling from a hat.

That's good stuff Ken, thanks for that!

  3. I've enjoyed sitting through many of the shows you've posted, Wirecutter.

Never even heard of Billy Strings until you turned me on to that... but I suppose it's easier for people to make time for a drive-by hit-and-run than to sit for an entire show.

I've never before heard of or listened to Ms. Farrell, but she's a good thing going and I'm grateful once again for the protip. Good stuff.

    1. I'd never heard of Billy Strings up until a month or so before I posted the first video.
Like I said, I don't like everything that Sierra Ferrell puts out, but what I like, I really like. A lot of the stuff grows on me after I listen to it a couple times, but that's not unusual.
I wish she'd hurry up and put out a CD - so far she's only put out a couple songs on digital downloads. I don't own a smartphone and I have nothing that's connected to Bluetooth, so I can't listen to her in the truck, and that's where I really enjoy music.

  4. not bad, but I like my Flatt & Scruggs in their original form (as I'm related to Scruggs if you go back about 150 years.

    1. Yeah, you can't beat that combination. They're the first bluegrass I ever heard and I instantly fell in love with that style of music.

  5. I have found the same to be true and not just bluegrass\country. I really like passion of new artists and their simple raw music that is not all polished even when electrified.

    1. The passion is everything with these youngsters. You can see it in their faces when they play.

  6. She was a friend of a friend, and modeled a portrait for me about ten years ago, exhibited in the gallery downtown. Good to see she's doing well.

    1. I've been in Tennessee for over 5 years now and I still don't have any radio stations preset on my truck stereo. I refuse to listen to the shit they play nowadays.

    2. I would think there would be at least one decent radio station out there, but they are like most states...most everything comes from and is determined by the big cities.
Hard for small radio stations to survive.
We have one out here that is hard to get and I do not think the are on all the time, but they play the old classic country.

    3. You could try WIGN AM 1550. They stream bluegrass gospel, not everyones cup of tea, but possibly for some people. Jim

  14. Charley Crockett is great, especially unique country.

  15. She reminds me of some of my mom's Nashville records from the 40's and 50's, same stark tonal qualities and sparse background instrumentals. It is great that it doesn't have that overproduced nashville sound-crap that they are pushing today.
    Kenny, Have a great Sunday,

  16. I'm really liking this Sierra Ferrell's music. The Yardbones accompany her well. Me thinks she's an old soul of country music's sunrise wearing a new meatsuit. OG

  17. Pretty sweet Ken. They can pick and they can sing, mountain music 2021 for sure. Mandolin Orange can do it too; don't always like the politics and the nose rings and shit, but they are still doing it right. Sienna Ferrell, that voice is 1940's haunting!

    1. I don't remember which song I first heard her doing, but I had turned on the video, then got up from my computer for some water. I heard her voice and thought "Whaaa....." and immediately came back in and sat down.
Like I said, I don't like everything she does, but what I do like, I really like.

  18. I have been following her for awhile.

I live in the ultra LIE-beral city of Austin, TX, where the official city motto is "Keep Austin Weird". So we have every freak you can imagine here. Even by Austin standards, she can look pretty bizarre at times.

But her voice is amazing!!! You feel like somebody cloned a mix of Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, and put the clone on steroids. I would go to the freakiest freak bar in town to see her in a second (where I guess I would look like the biggest freak there since I have no tattoos, no body piercings, short hair, and I would be wearing jeans and a nice button-down shirt!!!)
