20 bucks for 3 sticks, and city folks will buy it

There's a store in Strawberry, California on Hwy 108 that sold bundled wood like that. I asked the clerk if they sold much of it and she said "You'd be surprised." People from the Bay Area come up to camp, they don't own a saw (???) and they want a campfire, so they pay for wood that's neatly cut to length instead of spending 5 minutes looking for downed wood in the forest.

  2. See's a need and fills it. Do what you can to make a buck. You got to love it. It's no different than 7-11 selling spilt wood.

  3. Here in Missouri too. Montauk State Park. Bundle like that goes for 8 bucks.

    4. The Ohio Navy overruns both Lake Cumberland Dale Hollow every summer. I haven’t heard that term since I left Wayne County, KY to join the Army.

  4. We see something similar to that up this way (NH), though not for $30. It's also 12 pieces of split wood that may be equivalent to the three pieces in the photo for between $12 and $15.

  5. That ain't burnin' wood, thats for decorating. But, my local Walmart sells a small bundle of split hardwood, looks like maple, maybe around 8x8x18 for around six bucks.

  6. woah ! wonder what that works out to for a full cord ?

  7. What Daryl described is a cubic foot. There are 128 cubic feet in one cord of wood. They are sold individually for $6-$10.
That sure beats selling by the cord for $250-$400. Except there is extra labor in packaging and getting to market. The market is typically a metal cage out front of a mini-mart or some such. And someone to watch (take responsibility) that the bundles aren't stolen.

The real money is marketing the wood as interior decor. A basic tenet of retail sales is marking up the price creates value in the eyes of the buyers. People are dumb, they'll buy anything, especially if its creatively packaged and jacked up in price.

  9. Good luck finding down wood near a camp site here in cali. Easier to find it in green belts around town.

    1. I never had any problem finding wood. I think the key word here is 'developed' campsite. I didn't stay in any of those.

  10. Yea...
Made the mistake of staying in a well-loved state park once. The "wood search" kept my (at that time) 8 and 6 year old daughters busy for about 4 hours, though. Now, you can't bring in your own wood, ostensibly to cut down on pest and disease transmission, but I wonder if the gov. is getting kickback from the guys that sell wood like this. After the last year, I see a conspiracy everywhere.

  11. Well shit. I've probably got a couple hundred bucks sitting in the bed of my truck with some large pecan logs I haven't had a chance to split up yet.
