Yeah well, given that neighborhood.....

SACRAMENTO (CBS 13) — Droves of cockroaches are creeping and crawling through Sacramento neighborhoods.

Pest control companies say they’re seeing a surge in calls about infestations, which has people wondering: why is this happening now?

CBS13 is hearing some of the biggest concerns coming from people in the Pocket area who find huge roaches, oftentimes in the garage.

  1. Even the cockroaches have had enough of California.

  3. The things that crawl out of a warm moist crack between democrat legs. Vile. But, I am quickly reminded that more vile are the creatures crawling towards that same crack, to simply lie there in the pool of juice. -Bert

  4. I come from the land of Palmetto bugs. They should consider themselves lucky.

  6. I see an opportunity for the Deep-Fried insect restaurant entrepreneurs. After all who can tell the difference between a bread-coated Circadia or a Cockroach?

  7. Pocket looks like it should be a nice neighborhood. Then you look at the crime statistics and wonder WTF is going on. It probably doesn't help that it's right off of highway 5.

  8. You want big cockroaches? I'll give you big cockroaches. I will put Florida palmetto bugs up against any roach in the continental United States. Among their other attributes, they fly.

    1. Preach it, brother! When you find a palmetto bug you has better kill it outright; otherwise you just piss them off.

  9. So...homelessness plus filthy living conditions plus garbage equals bugs?
    Yes, Governor.

  10. We call the big roaches water bugs here in West Virginia as in , "No, we don't have roaches, those are just water bugs".

  11. I will never forget my first encounter with a palmetto bug. I was in the Navy and stationed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. I came into one of the offices and switched on the light. What appeared to me to be the biggest cockroach I had ever seen was sitting in the middle of the desktop. It took off running and tried to hide under the black Navy telephone. It was too big to fit under there! It scared the crap out of me. (Fortunately, I was manly enough to NOT scream like a little girl, but just barely.)

    That one got away.

But another time, again in Charleston, I was at a friends house when their cat started stalking something behind the window drapes. The cat suddenly lunged and came up with a palmetto bug in its mouth. Crunch, crunch, crunch, and it was gone. Then the cat gave us a look like "That was good, boss. You got any more of those?"

    Yeah, palmetto bugs.

But here in the midwest and upper south, we have something else - Pennsylvania Wood Roaches. They are a wild roach that are common hereabouts. They are nowhere as big as a palmetto bug - only about an inch and a half long - but like palmetto bugs, they fly and they swarm. If you get a swarm of those inside your fireplace flue, it can make for some interesting times when you light the fireplace the first time for the winter.

    Ask me how I know.

  12. The Pocket is one of Sac's "finer" neighborhoods, so this is surprising. When I lived there the only pain in the ass was the gate codes.
