Post-Shooting Procedures for the Active Killer Gunfight

I’ve written about the danger of being shot by responding officers after intervening in an active killer attack many times, but I’ve never given precise guidelines about how to handle the post-shooting procedures in order to reduce the chance of being mistakenly killed. This article describes exactly what you should consider doing to keep from being killed by other first responders during an active killer attack.

  1. The NUMBER ONE RULE for civilian self defense with a gun is DON'T BE HOLDING A GUN when the badgemonkeys show up. Their default method of operation is shoot first, shoot a LOT and to hell with the consequences....and anyone NOT wearing a uniform and badge is fair game.

    2. Not only that but what about another citizen that decides to enter the mix. I have often thought that if you hollered out what the bad guy is wearing or if the bad guy is down or something to distinguish you from said douchebag could only help in not getting shot from someone who is carrying but but overly anxious to shoot or be a hero. Never know, choose your battles wisely, but definitely dont be holding nothing but your hands up in the air by the time the law shows up.

  2. Don't mean to be rude but my CCW is to protect my family. I can't protect them if I'm arrested, insured, or killed because I stepped into something.

And, yes, I spent my time in SO AND EMS. It only strengthens my resolve to protect MY family.

    1. YEA, I've slowly evolved to where you are. Always strapped and never pulling it until me and mine are threatened. You are on your own.

    2. I've often said that, if it's my fight then I'm fighting to win but I'm not going looking for the fight. I've heard from people, how could you not go do something and my response is always it's not my fight, my responsibility is to my family and those with me at the time. YMMV

  4. Whew, I heard about this as soon as the coproaches admitted they killed the good guy, and I am still too emotional to give a calm response. I will simply say, we don't need them, I don't want them, and I will never support them again. Costumed revenue agents with guns is ALL they are.

  5. If there is a 911 caller during/after the shooting, have the caller describe what you, (the shooter), is wearing. Have the caller continue to update dispatch after the event, letting them know that it's over, and the shooter is down.

Be prepared to tell police basic information about what happened. Yes, I know, Fifth Amendment Right to remain silent, to counsel, etc... From personal experience, the options are to give minimal info or spend the night in jail.

  6. Can we please get rid of the bullshit phrase "first responders"? The first reponders are the people on the receiving end of the gunman's attention. Police and paramedics are usually third or fourth responders.

    1. Never walk away assuming you mean literally leaving the scene.

They will find you, all the security cameras around, cell phones...

Best to put your gun out of sight (not holstered but out of sight) and let dispatchers know scene is safe, bad guy description (yellow shirt) and there is an armed citizen good guy at the scene.

  9. This is good info. One part that I think can cause a problem if there are other witnesses is that part where he recommends keep shooting the perp neutralized. Witnesses will probably tell the police that you kept shooting the perp after the perp was on the ground, even though the perp might still have been trying to bring the weapon to bear. The witnesses might not remember that the perp was still trying to kill people even though down.

The other strategy not mentioned is the one police employee. Keep firing until your weapon is dry, then reload and assess.

I like this guy's attitude. I think his totem animal must be some kind of cat. (That whole 'If he's still moving, he needs to be killed some more.' thing.)
