Another British biplane, the Fairey Swordfish torpedo bomber was the spearpoint of the Battle of Taranto on November 11th and 12th, 1940. It was the first naval battle fought with aircraft launched from ships. The Royal Navy attacked at night with the aircraft whose loaded top speed was around 75 knots and heavily damaged the Italian fleet based at Taranto in southern Italy. The attack is believed to have been studied by the Imperial Japanese Navy and used as a template for the Pearl Harbor attack late the next year.
