Power and precision, or comfort and concealability? High capacity and versatility of application, or ease of access and maneuverability? Whether you choose to carry a larger EDC gun or a smaller pistol ideal for concealed carry, you should do so with the knowledge of its advantages and its limitations. In this episode, Bill Wilson and Massad Ayoob talk about these differences, and discuss why they make the carry choices that they do.

Here in the Gunshine State, we don’t often wear the bulky clothing necessary to cover larger handguns. Today’s new micro pistols are the way to go. My XDs that I carried when I lived in NY is hard to conceal here in FL.
ReplyDeleteIf you're old enough, you might get away with a bowling shirt which can hide a multitude of sins.
DeleteIf you are young enough there are options as well. Seems like everyone these days, young and old, are wearing their fanny packs across their chest. There are, also, quite a few lines of camera backs, such as Maxpedition's Versi and gearslinger line. Crossbreed and Alien Gear make a couple of really nice inside the waistband holsters that allow for shirts to be tucked over the pistol (I use both with my Glock 19). My main carry is my Glock 20, full size 10mm, that I have paired with an IWB Comp-Tac.
DeleteMy line of thinking is always to use what you are comfortable with. Hell, 5.11 Tactical even makes backpacks to hold AR pistols and SBR's if that is what you are comfortable with.
Why I love my overalls. I can pocket carry a full size 1911.
ReplyDeleteI can effectively and comfortably cc a 5" 1911 all year long, shorts and t-shirt in summer or bulkier clothing in winter. Along with 1 or 2 spare mags. 6' tall, 210 lbs. Holster selection is critical in the summer.
ReplyDeleteI recently picked up a compact 9mm. First time out, first time ever shooting a compact auto, my groupings from 5 and 10 yards sucked. Then, just because, I shot one handed at a 4" rock from at least 25 yards and smacked that rock 17 shots in a row.
ReplyDeleteI am intrigued by the compact autos. But I prefer the larger frame, like N frame on the old shooters. People talk and talk but EDC is a personal decision based on personal characteristics. All that talking might make an individual more aware of certain aspects that go into choosing what to carry.
I carried a PPK for years and was fairly good with the 32 cal gun. It was a gun my uncle gave me and he was a WWII vet. It has the Luftwaffe cartouche. When I finally realized its value it became a safe queen. I carried a Glock 26 for a couple of years and could never hit shit with it. I sold it last year after it had spent a couple of years in the safe. My daily carry is a Glock full size 45, 10mm, or a S&W Model 65-2 357.
ReplyDeleteI have one of each, almost always in the AIWB. I carry either a glock 19 or a sig p365, depending on what I’m wearing, time of year, etc. I shoot the bigger pistol much much better and draw a lot faster with it too, but sometimes the smaller gun is the way to go. No one cares or pays any attention to people carrying a CCW around here, but it’s always been a priority with me - not having people be able to tell it’s there.

I am not a pistol carry expert, nor adept at commentary, and 73 retired USMC. Years ago I was first introduced to the M-9 and fell in love with its ease of use. Purchased a Beretta 92FS as a carry. Bulky and heavy I later bought a Ruger LCP 380. That was OK, but did not have a safety so a round in the chamber was verboten. Stumbled on a Springfield EMP in 9MM, a mini 1911 clone. It is a good compromise for me between the full size and pocket size carry. Full hand grip, no pinched fingers, 10+1 rounds, and double safeties. While I am not an expert marksman, I practice draw and double tap at 5-7 yards with good results. The EMP has 5 inches between the sights and I've good results at 25-50 yards, though with varying accuracy. I carry to protect myself and anyone else that might be in harms way. But don't think I will hesitate.
ReplyDeleteSP 101 in 357 for me. That is, while the situ is still somewhat civil. Ohio Guy
