Never trust your parking brake alone. I speak from experience after having a Ford F-250 disappear when the footbrake mechanism failed while I was standing 20 feet away. When I park on a hill I always shut the engine off and put it in gear, even if it's just to open my front gate. BTW, I found out after the fact that F-250s of the vintage I owned were pretty famous for having the parking brake pop off.
