MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Two major incidents were reported on the first day of lobster mini season in Monroe County as one man died after losing consciousness at Sawyer Key and another man was airlifted to a hospital after being struck by a boat propeller off the Lower Keys. A man also drowned off the coast of Pompano Beach, according to officials.

Back in the late fifties a man I knew bought a new boat. It was a fancy one with one of those tall mercury engines they made back then. It cost a bundle. He put it in the water, took off and ran over both of his little girls killing them both. That boat was pulled out and put in a barn. It never saw the water again and I doubt it traveled over two hundred feet in the water. He would not sell it. I always wondered what happened to it. He was a man then and I was just a kid so I'm sure he is long gone. It was a tragedy for sure.
