It's far from being a waste of money. They are not there for pictures, they are taking direct measurements of wind speed and pressure, and dropping sondes that measure the intensity of the storm. They transverse the storm from multiple directions to get an accurate cross sectional picture of its size and strength. It's fundamental to creating the forecast which, if you notice, have become very good at predicting size, strength, and path over the years.

ReplyDeleteThey do it in order to get readings of pressure and windspeed at various levels, in order to help guess the path and the intensity of said storm.
DeleteAnd there's also the side research that goes into making newer aircraft better able to handle rougher weather.
