The Global Chip Shortage Will Have a Major Impact on Consumers

The global chip shortage is beginning to impact consumers, driving up prices of smartphones, vehicles and personal electronics as manufacturers struggle to keep up with rising demand.

“We’re seeing 5% to 10% price increases right now,” Glen O’Donnell, vice president and research director at Forrester, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “They will increase more as this issue drags on.”

    1. Nemo, I may be wrong but I think the world's major chip manufacture(s) is located in Taiwan and the increased demand is due to COVID because of increased demand on products that need these micro chips.

The real fun will begin if evil China invades Taiwan - then forgot about chip manufacturing for years and it takes billions of dollars and many years to build a chip factory elsewhere.

In short, the whole world is going to be screwed soon as far as micro chips are concerned.

  2. I know it's been affecting my place of employment. Things like microcontrollers, LCD and OLED displays, and some memory ICs now have lead times of 52 weeks or more. Other parts are on allocation, meaning a supplier will ship, but only a certain number, and then usually well below the quantity you want/need. We are dealing with both, something difficult for us because we have a new product line coming out and we've had to delay the launch and limit the number we can ship.

This shortage has certainly affected the auto industry with manufacturers shutting down production lines and furloughing employees until the manufacturers can get the electronic systems so many vehicles depend on to operate.
