"Attention Kmart shoppers, attention Kmart shoppers..."

GRASS VALLEY (CBS13) — California’s only remaining Kmart store will be closing during the holiday season.

A worker at the Grass Valley location says they got word of the impending closure last week. The store is now set to be closed for good on Dec. 19.

  1. I went into this very store a week ago to pick up a prescription and the place was empty. I was the only customer at the pharmacy at 9 AM and left the store after seeing only one other customer.
    Sad to see it go.

  5. WalMart will move in. They've been resisting it for years, they only want small mom and pop stores. People in Grass Valley and surrounding towns don't want to drive to Auburn or Sacto for their China goods. Chico tried to pull the same crap and lost.

    1. The Grass Valley Kmart will become a Target store. It was actually announced at the same time that the closure was announced. It will take a year before the Target opens while they give the old building the once over.

Personal note: The entrance to Kmart was where I declined to sign the petition to 'outlaw the trophy hunting of mountain lions in California' in 1997. That was coincidental to the time that the Bay Area Karens took over politics in Nevada County and it's been all downhill ever since.

  6. I worked at Kmart from 1982-1990. Helped get me through vet school. It was a great organization back then. They hated and feared Sam Walton as he was only getting started with his empire. Obviously they had good reason to fear him, it's cause of Walmart that they've gone the way of the dodo. Unlike Walmart, they didn't lie about buying non American Crap. For decades, Walmart used the logo Made in America until Kmart crashed. Then they started buying all the chink shit.

  7. Kmart pissed me off in 1981 with some bait-n-switch advertising, and I swore I'd never set foot in one again. I haven't.

  8. The billionaire guy (Eddie Lampert) who bought K-mart-and later on Sears-knew nothing about retail. He was a real estate guy. Both companies were relatively old (K-mart's parent was SS Kressge, who was almost as old as Sears) and were from a different mold: they actually owned the land their stores sat on, unlike most other chains that merely leased their stores and the land. Eddie felt the land underneath his stores would be worth a gold mine some day, even it the retail operation was weak.

Not sure what his thinking is these days. Maybe he can sell his stores to Fauci to be re-purposed as vaccination centers. Later on they can become morgues.

  9. Late 80's I was working as a Government Contractor In Prince Georges County Maryland. I got off early on Christmas eve and decided to pick up some last-minute stocking stuffer toys for the kids at the K-Mart in PG Plaza.

As I was shopping, I heard an announcement: there was a bleu-light special in the gardening department. I ignored it since that wasn't what I was looking for. A few moments later the clerk came back on the PA system stating: "Attention K-Mart shoppers! Someone has stolen my flashing blue light. Would you please bring it back?"

    Good times, good times.
