Alligator gars are a unique species of fish and are often referred to as "living fossils." This is because fossil records for the animals have been discovered dating back almost 100 million years.
The fish is usually found in areas like southwestern Ohio, parts of Missouri and Illinois. The fish has not been found, however, in the state of Kansas.
Bull $hit - Alligator gars have been cruising the streams and rivers of southeastern Kansas as far back as I remember and Dad was not 'kind' if he caught one. That's like the KDWP bunch saying there are no mountain lions in Kansas, ask a rancher.
We've got them in East Texas rivers too, lots of them, and I've seen them bigger than that one. They're very hard to hook because of their armour, usually they're caught by accident when they hit someone's trot line that has a catfish already hooked. If they swallow the catfish, then they're hooked.
I can't figure out who in the heck would keep one as a pet though - not sure Kansas officials are on a productive track with that one.....
They are tough, we always run the meat through a meat grinder and make patties out of them. Season with a little green onion and Cajun seasoning and lightly flour, then pan fry. Makes damn fine sandwiches with a cold one or two JD

KDWP admits the mountain lions now. One has been picked up by security cameras in Riverside, Wichita a few times.
