This week, the largest US producer of aluminum billet used to make automobiles and building supplies told customers and business associates that output capacity might be curtailed in 2022 due to a lack of magnesium supply.
"In the last several weeks, magnesium availability has dried up, and we have not been able to purchase our required magnesium units for all of 2022," Matalco Inc. President Tom Horter said in the letter obtained by S&P Global Platts.
I'm in the biz. 6061 t6 depot stock is gone. 22 week restock time. We mainly machine 7075 and 2024. There's still some depot stock available. Restock time is 16 weeks. Here's what I find amazing. Domestic foundries will not purchase or process recycled chips. (metal shavings created when machining parts). All that goes to China. That's one hell of a lot of material. WTF?
Why would they not be allowed to buy? Personally I think it would require a deviation in traditional smelting processes. Probably worth developing. There are a lot of FAT corporations here domestically that have become very lazy. I'm going with that. But stop and consider how pure that resource is compared to the dirt they normally process. Makes no sense. Also, any recycled yellow metal, copper or brass, China buys it all. That'll be a big problem sooner or later.
Ken,
ReplyDeleteWe buy billet from Matalco, they sent us the same letter. Thanks Joe
