I've Been Driving Trucks For 20 Years, I'll Tell You Why America's "Shipping Crisis" Will Not End

I’m a Class A truck driver with experience in nearly every aspect of freight. My experience in the trucking industry of 20 years tells me that nothing is going to change in the shipping industry. 

Let’s start with understanding some things about ports. 

Outside of dedicated port trucking companies, most trucking companies won’t touch shipping containers. There is a reason for that.

    Have to note again - Why did no one in 'leadewrship' of the country see getting 90% of all our stuff from an enemy country was not a serious therat to national security. Useless bastards.

    2. A lot of truth in that. Gummint allows corporation to transfer their mfg capabilities off shore cause the corp. empires were looking to cash in on cheaper costs and they paid (donated to the re-election campaigns) of the gummint offals that allowed the offshoring. It's all a money game. If you have any doubts or suspicions it isn't, just follow the money trail, it never lies.

    3. Indeed. He wanted to see about reshoring work. Some of that had already started under Obama because the cost of doing business overseas was rising quickly and it was becoming cheaper to move the work back to the US. Obama seemed to discourage that reshoring, but it picked up again after Trump took office. That trend slowed with the arrival of Covid. It has since reversed itself since Biden took office. It is now getting very expensive to manufacturer here, particularly with the huge jump in energy prices.

  4. Just In Time or as we called it Almost Too Late is another piece of the problem. One of the culprits for that BS is local, regional and Federal taxation on inventory. The Bean Counters have figured out if there is no inventory, then you don't have to pay taxes on it. It is cheaper to have an empty shelf for that item, than have one in stock that might not get used in the next 30 days.

  5. He seems to be blaming the companies for all this. Not enough cranes, low wages, poor warehouse management, not enough containers. Then he says we need LAWS to force the companies to work 24/7, hire more workers, and pay more.
    Perfect lead-in for the government to take it all over.
    No, the government caused this with shutdowns, limited workers due to covid restrictions, forced vaccines, regulations on independent truckers, regulations on shipping, customs, tariffs, and full backing of whatever the unions wanted in limited hours and blockage of automation.
    2/3 of the world's largest ports are owned by China.
    Obama signed the agreement in 2012 giving China control of the port of Los Angeles.
    Trump forced China to sell their interest in the port of Long Beach.
    Most ports in the US are controlled and operated by government port authorities made up of government appointed managers.
    No, you can't blame some company for this. It’s the government’s fault.

    1. I second all of that. This guy is a pessimist who seems to thing that government fixes things.

      He seems to miss that with the massively higher shipping costs come new players and innovators looking to get a piece of the logistics pie. THIS is where the solution lies: Get government (And unions) out of the way, and let the innovators get to work.

      And his constant griping about higher costs only highlights that, but he seems unable to see that this trouble causes it's own solution. Well, regulations willing anyway.

  7. I second the notion that unintended consequences of gov regulation at all levels of freight, shipping and transportation has caused this. Companies are stuck playing the game by .gov rules. only fools would risk $$$ when gov "fixes" something with an idiotic reg change
