Firefighters protect woman, use axe to disable assailant's truck

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Charges have been filed against a man accused of ramming his pickup truck into a Minneapolis fire station Thursday night where firefighters were protecting a woman he was following.

Shawn Coates, 52, was charged on Friday with two counts of fourth-degree assault and one count each of threats of violence and third-degree criminal property damage in the incident.

    1. Well, this one does. It is not possible or practical to have it on my person while on duty, but my gun is in my pickup truck parked in the bay at all times. That situation would have ended with the perp in a body bag at my department. BTW, 2 other firefighters on different shifts do the same as I, so our house is definitely a safe space.

  2. He has been released without bail by the same judge who presided over the Kim Potter trial. https://alphanews.org/man-who-tried-to-run-over-firefighter-released-on-zero-bail-by-judge-chu/

    1. Waaal, that's understandable. The photo at the link shows Coates and Chu have the same nose. Might be kinfolk and all.

    2. Karma would dictate that Judge Chu be the next woman Coates follows.

  3. And he is one of the Minnesota Norwegians.

  4. A long, long time ago, on a fire department far, far away, Da City had a somewhat similar problem.

Times were different. Assaulting a medic was a misdemeanor. Often, the assailant would resist arrest, and appropriate (and enthusiastic) force would be required to detain him.

Mighta got outa jail, did not escape punishment.

  5. Maybe he will return to the fire house and find out about the steel end of an axe.

  6. Maybe he should start following the judge around.

    1. Criminals largely know that merely inconveniencing a noble is often a capital crime, with no right to appeal. Actively fucking with one? Only the truly crazy try that.

  7. I do find it interesting the DWI wasn't on the list of charges. And in Texas, he would have gotten Agg Assault with a Deadly Weapon for trying to run over the firefighters.
