Uncovering the reasoning why most carriages, wagons, coaches and buggies have smaller wheels in front and larger wheels in the back. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles often delves in to designs, functions and why's. This is a bit in the designs of the front axle steering and why wheels are sized like they are.

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing that W.C., I have owned three wagons in all, the first being a John Deere Cargo buck board from Hattiesburg, MS. second was an Omish Dr.s Carriage and the and the last was an Omish Family's transportation from VA. Wish I knew then what I know now, damn my luck anyways.

DeleteVery interesting. My great grandfather was or was about the last harness maker in the St. Lawrence Valley in NY. My father had some of his tools. I've always been interested in the era when horses were the farm tractor.
