Electric vehicles and charging dead zones in California: Why owning an EV isn't easy for everyone

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California hopes to accelerate its push toward 100% zero-emission new car sales by 2035. But some people who want to do their part to lessen the carbon footprint are having to install impractical, makeshift charging stations.

The charging station Rebecca Lucky of Santa Clara County constructed to charge her 2019 Nissan Leaf is not like charging stations you may have seen in parking lots or garages.

*****

There's exactly one charging station in all of Macon County. It's located at the power station in Lafayette and I've never seen a single car hooked up to it.

  1. All this zero emissions stuff is nonsense, the ecological hazard of those cars are over the moon, not to mention the cost to purchase and maintain them. This is literally the inmates running the asylum

  2. Every high power charging station is the equivalent of adding another home to the grid.

The grid in California is inadequate now, both in charging and distribution. And nobody seems willing to build more charging plants, even to replace the nuke and other plants taken off line.

And as far as distribution goes...no more power lines?

  3. So, when are they going to make the charging stations solely dependent on wind and solar power?
    Cuz, sustainability!

  4. Ya'll need to revisit your Einstein & Physics books, there is no form of energy available without first transforming the form of energy you are presently using from another form of energy. WIth the exception of water falling due to evaporation and rainfall. It is impossible. But even that takes the energy of the sun the turn water into vapor and condense as rain. Even burning wood first takes energy, heat, to transfer the wood to energy in fire. So you're dreamed up utopian her carbon emissions society can only occur in hollywierd and the even weirder halls of congress. So there you have it boys and grills, graded school physics solved the problem.

    1. And as we all know, water vapor is the largest single contributor to greenhouse gasses.

Additionally, regarding heat from burning wood, first the trees must grow using sequestered carbon to become capable of being burned to create heat.

So many climate change fallacies, so little time to refute them.

  5. Come on you whiners. Owning an EV is easy.
If you are hardcore stupid and want to DRIVE one, that's YOUR problem.
(Sorry, not trying to p.ss anybody off, just want to make a point).

  6. The push for electric vehicles is just one more step in the process to control the population. They know there is not enough and never will be enough electricity to charge the equivalent of all the cars currently on the road. There is a push to have only electric as the only energy source available to the masses. No gasoline or diesel vehicles, no gas stoves or furnaces. Then the rationing will start if you're on food terms with the powers that be you'll get some, maybe enough if you're important enough. The rest will have to forgo owning luxuries like your own transportation.

  7. When your asshole deep in snow and your EV runs out of power what are they going to do, bring you a bucket of electricity? EV's might be ok for some places but not for all.

  8. Don't focus on the EV's themselves. Its the coming restrictions on building and permitting new Gas Stations.
If the engineered sky high prices of gasoline and diesel don't work, then they'll shut down the existing gas stations. One by One.

  9. Let's not forget that EV's also talk to their manufacturer via WIFI. They report all of your driving habits and battery condition. This tech has been in all cars since 2013, not just EV's. I suspect this info is behind the push for .gov being able to take control of your vehicle at their whim. It also makes your vehicle susceptible to hacking as been proven by white hat hackers. 'Course the say they're doing it "to protect the public and fight crime. As usual, it's for our safety.

  10. EV's make sense in big city where the climate stays above freezing. It makes progressively less sense as you move away from bigger southern cities. But bureaucrats have no sense, and always want to inflict the same rules on everybody.

It also works for light bulbs. LED's are great when the windows are open or the AC is running. The old fashioned hot light bulbs provide a little bit of free heat when you're running the furnace anyway.

  11. They mention low income areas several times. The last time I looked at prices, I don't think they need to worry about charging stations in low income areas.

  12. "Guy Hall, director and policy committee chair for the Electric Vehicle Association, [said] Having electric vehicles has saved him money because he hasn't had to pay for gas and maintenance."

    EVs don't need maintenance?
Jesus, you asshole. I expect you to spew propaganda, but at least make it believable propaganda.
