It's possible he was intending to accelerate away, and traction disagreed. Had that happen to me in a city that put pavers at every crosswalk, which turned to have a poorer coefficient of friction than the pavement on either side. Was turning right across pavers, big fishtail followed by a hookup followed by damn near a high side, followed by a change of shorts. No warning. Line stepping on a roller skate. Was likely hilarious to watch.
Brand new tires have a thin skin of mold release agent so they can be as slippery as oiled glass when new. Riders are warned to "scrub-in" new tires before doing any maneuvers that require high traction. Also some people mistakenly put "tire shine" products on the tread, they should only go on the sidewall. Or the dumbass thought he was going to do a burnout so he braked the front wheel killing the gyroscopic stability.
#6. Contractor putting up a PEMB (pre engineered metal building) for me a few jobs back...unloaded the 25' steel wall panels just like that. Creased well over 100 panels. Had video of him doing it when the supplier complained to us it was our fault. Delivery of those new panels, semi driver ran over the corner of another 5 dozen panels the contractor didn't mark the location of before the snow like he was asked to do. Took 4yrs to finish a 270 day project, better than a year after I left.
#10 It looks like the fellow who fell must have had a phone on his back pocket. You'll see the smoke from the damaged phone (and battery) coming from his back pocket. So the poor fellow got a twofer - a bruised tailbone and a burned buttock all in one action.
I believe so. Lithium-ion batteries are made of super thin layers of lithium with a super thin layer of non-conductive material separating the positive and negative layers. If the battery is crushed positive and negative layers touch causing a short circuit. The heat melts more of the insulation and causes the lithium to expand creating a cascading short circuit that can't be extinguished. This is why when a Tesla catches fire, the firemen can only contain it until it burns out. There was a fire 10? years ago on board an aircraft because a passenger's cell was crushed by a reclining seat, luckily the plane was at the gate. Where I work we immediately bought laptop sized silicon containment pouches for each executive jet. The FAA has since warned that pouches may not be adequate. https://www.lithiumfireguard.com

ReplyDelete#2 How the heck did he do that without leaving ANY skidmark / burnt rubber?

#2. Insurance company: Oh, you have a video of your accident? Let's have a look ... Ah, no. Why? well, "no-fault" does not always mean "I f'kd up."
ReplyDelete#10. I always wondered what a "burner phone" was.
ReplyDeleteKen, that is an excellent bunch. Even made this grumpy old man laugh out loud.
