The largest recorded earthquakes in the history of the US east of the rocky mountains are still somewhat of a mystery to both scientists and historians, but the few first-hand accounts from this then sparsely populated land paint a grim picture indeed.

It's been said the New Madrid "fault" is the result of the crust being cracked by a very large object grazing the planet. It is actually a giant crack in the crust of the planet.

ReplyDeleteI grew up a hundred miles from this. What I remember is being told that the New Madrid earthquake rang church bells - in Boston.
ReplyDeleteThe US was sparsely populated back then. If the New Madrid fault did that today, it would cost billions of dollars in damages and countless lost lives.
