Americans’ Spending Slows Dramatically Amid Surging Inflation and Gas Prices

American’s spending slowed in February amid surging inflation and gas prices, the U.S. Census Bureau announced Wednesday.

Retail sales grew 0.3% in February, a significant dip from January’s 4.9% monthly increase, the Census Bureau reported Wednesday. January’s spending increase marked the largest jump since March 2021 after Americans received the final $1,400 government stimulus check.

  2. That's because they have never lived in hard times and are stupid. I just moved from out of country and lost some of my stuff. I've pretty much replaced all my heirloom seed and the garden is growing. Herb beds planted. 5 Heifers in the field and having a hell of a time finding Buff Orpington. I reckon the bird flu and all. The local farm stores have a few chicks in of other breeds that I may have to settle for. I just really like that Buff Orpington. Hog pen is ready. It was in rough shape but I'm about ready for some swine.

  3. Don't known that spending has slowed so much as it's been redirected towards food and fuel and away from other things. Most of us can make do with a lot of things but food and fuel are just haves.

    1. And of course food and fuel are excluded from the CPI.

  4. Don't drive much but have been on the turnpike twice in the last two weeks. Of course mr. lead foot here has slowed down to below the speed limit, I notice very few truckers passing me and paced behind one for 2 hours. Few cars passing as well. Ha even one state trooper passed me and I joked to my kids that hasn't happened in years.
