In the USA, there's a shut off valve called a breakaway that activates in those situations. It closes off the both the dispenser end and the hose end. It beats the crap out of the side of your car as an added bonus.
And everybody acts like it's going to explode. This ain't the movies, people! Not saying it's not dangerous, you really don't want to get splashed, but minimum safe distance is MUCH less than 30'. The pump isn't really all that strong even if it doesn't shut off, being designed for volume, not pressure.
On the other hand, what *is* the minimum safe distance for ignorance? (There's a comic about that at freefall.purrsia.com, but I can't find the specific strip at the moment.)
Good to see that SOMEONE had some sense though, it was extinguished pretty quickly and as far as I can tell, correctly.
And yeah, they should have had (but don't) a disconnect in the line. Disconnects CAN fail though, so even where they're required by law it's not a guarantee.
As I said in an earlier post today, these folks do not have the IQ to even make petro or the pumps so you can't expect them to handle such things with any kind of intelligence. Like giving a monkey a hand grenade.
Funniest part for me was watching them try to drag wheeled motorcycles out of the way. The couple of idiots dragging them finally got them up on the wheels to roll away, much much easier.
I saw a version of that when a car hit the pump as it was pulling in. I don't recall if there was any fire at all but I never saw anyone move as fast as the station owner running out with a fire extinguisher.
I was servicing some inside-the-building gear when a senior citizen tried to drive away with the nozzle still inserted. An employee ran outside and yelled "STOP!" while placing himself in front of the vehicle. The driver paused, then resumed driving away. Some people need to have their driving privileges revoked sooner rather than later.
Another highlight from Nancy Pelosi's Tahitian vacation.

Didn't know Psaki had a video of her news conference review session.
ReplyDeleteThe best part is he just drove off.

ReplyDeleteSeen that - that's why they have strain relief disconnects...
