Tennessee Considering Waiving Vehicle Registration Fees for a Year

A bill that would waive Tennessee’s license plate registration fees for a full year could save Tennessee drivers $121.6 million based on legislative estimates.

Senate Bill 2491 was amended to include the fee waiver before being approved by the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee earlier this month. It has been assigned to the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee.

Let's see, I've got 2 vehicles that cost me about $115 apiece to register, so at today's current gas prices, that's what, 3 tanks of gas?

  1. I like the idea vs. some of the other stimulus (free money) program ideas being floated?
Who gets the 'break'? Folks that drive cars and pay taxes, register their vehicles. Thats pretty ubiquitous across income and other groups.
Who DOESN'T benefit from the kickback? People who don't legally operate their motor vehicle.

  2. Why is the problem never addressed?

    1. Because its the golden goose, the cash cow.

      1 - create the problem
      2 - offer various solutions
      (all involve money)
3 - skim your share off the top

  3. They don't roll back the gas taxes because they are an important piece of revenues. (Important=big $)

If they did something meaningful they would suffer backlash when they reinstated it. That's why they do something that they can point to on paper but that has little if any impact.

  4. When you see a "tax holiday" proposal, the government is secretly admitting they don't need the money.

If they don't need the money, the smart thing to do would be to repeal the tax permanently, close down the department, and give all the workers a severance.
It could happen. And pigs could fly.

  5. All of this rebate/tax holiday stuff is mousefarts. Consider: inflation at 8% is the equivalent of a ONE MONTH salary loss over the year. Anybody out these making less than $2000 a month? That's a $10 minimum wage. (We'll ignore the welfare drones/non workers). Every time, every single time some dumb politician proposes something like this he needs to be slapped into next week. The problem is printing money not backed by economic value creation, tax disincentives to capital investment, and ever more regulations and laws.

  6. Don't get your hopes up. It's probably the Democrats trying to get some good press because of the upcoming midterm elections. I'll bet the bill fails. Or if it is voted in, it's most likely got all manner of stuff in it to make it toothless. Ni way are they going to let go of 122 billion dollars.

  7. It might only be 3 tanks of gas, but it still beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Well actually it's more like 8 to adjust for the extra gas price of what you are paying now minus what you paid last year.

  9. all these states removing there taxes from the price of gas will get votes. It fixes nothing down the the road. Fuck politicians.

  10. My question is always, "what's it going to cost me?". Watch the other hand to see what they're taking away/charging/charging more for. What's the catch?
