Stupid. Beyond stupid. Beyond really stupid. Take a motor that should last a half a million miles when driven like it should be driven, soup it up and blow it up in seconds trying to get 10 times the horsepower out of it than it was designed to produce.
I watched a longer version of this somewhere else. What impressed the heck out of me other than the explosion, was how quickly some of the spectators moved in to help rescue the driver and passenger. Americans are so cool! God Bless em!
I saw a similar video from the stands. In that case, right after the engine exploded, a guy took a Leatherman out of his pocket, leaned over and picked up one of the pistons that had been deposited beside him. I think the stands should have been a little farther away.
I've seen that one too. It was a piston with half of its connecting rod still dangling off of it. It's lucky it didn't smash somebody in the face. But that was a different demonstration. The old Dodge pickup they blew up was the same color in both videos but in the gif above there's a lot more fire than the video with the flying pistons.
When I was a young log hauler the guys I worked with that were part of the 'High Horsepower' crowd would take their 1000 horsepower Peterbilts and Kenworths to Sacramento to strap them to a Dyno to see what their winter's tinkering had created. Some of those rigs were so souped up that while on the Dyno their drive tires were slinging rubber onto the shop's ceiling. Me, I was more concerned with how much money I had in my business' bank account at the end of the year than I was interested in impressing my 'friends', who would talk behind my back as soon as I was out of sight.
Bunch of shade tree mechanics blowing up stuff. It's hard enough to keep them together when it's what you do all day and your job depends on it. Check any pro race circuit. Doesn't matter what it is, ICE engines pushed to their limits are gonna blow. Even if you do everything right......
The folks that built that motor are the farthest thing from shade tree mechanics. Hell, guys have been blowing up engines ever since.......well, since there were engines, steam or gas or diesel. How many rockets blew up to put man into orbit? Limits are there to be pushed. It would probably have been better if they did it via a remote, instead of sitting in the cab, though. Anyway, you need to check out the video of the truck back in the shop, showing how close the guy in the drivers seat came to actually being decapitated.
Timin musta been off eh?
