According to local news outlet WCPO, this is Dell Hall’s fourth consecutive year sustaining a beer-only diet, but he said it’s not about getting drunk.

We went to the field one time on a survey shot which was basically just to see if that site was suitable for future field problems, so it didn't require the full company, just the tower team, a few radio operators and a couple guys to use as grunt labor.
When we went out on survey shots, German farmers in the area would stop by and offer to trade with us, food and beer for mogas or C Rations, shit like that. This shot wasn't any different.
I had to run to another site to borrow something and went I got back, one of the guys says, "Here, check out what we scored!" and pulls me around to a trailer. It was full of cases of beer.
"What did you swap for that?" I asked.
"Our food."
"All of it?"
"Yup, uh-huh."
We spent the next two weeks with beer for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I gained 5 pounds.
Then there's this one from LA

Nemo
Brooklyn Imperial Chocolate Stout would have filled him up.
ReplyDeleteMy father in law passed last year. I never knew he was a drunk until I saw him sober. He used to brag about not eating, only drinking beer. He was skinny as a rail. Lived that way for a few years... Then a stroke, couldn't speak very well. Then he lost his legs, and wound up in a wheel chair for the last 12 years of life.
ReplyDeleteIt may be liquid bread, but man doesn't live by bread alone.
Curious about the German famers trading beer for GI food. I could see that right after the War when Germany was pretty much in ashes, but things were still a little tight back then when you were there?
ReplyDeleteNah, they just wanted something different. We always knew when we were going out to one of these remote sites so we stocked up on cigarettes, coffee, and canned meats for the adults, and candy for the kids.
DeleteFor some ungodly reason though, C Rations were a hot item.
Storing food for the next war?????
DeleteIn Medieval times, it was very common for monks to fast the entire Lenten season and sustain themselves only on beer (straight water was often considered unsafe as it was frequently contaminated). The Bock style, which is higher in calories than many other styles, was created specifically for this purpose.
ReplyDeleteWe did the exact same thing on a little site outside of K-town. The site was inside of a grape vinyard and the old man would trade us wine for MREs
ReplyDeleteBeer is a food group !
ReplyDeleteWC: Your farmers might have worn a feldgrau uniform in younger years and just wanted a reminder of the good old days now and then.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they did. Most German males of that age at the time did serve in WWII.
DeleteI can say I never ran into one that held a grudge.
WRITE THE BOOK!!!
ReplyDeleteHeheh! Many times when we jumped into Grafenwhore or Hohenflies from Italy in the 509 Abn, German kids on bikes rode by with a beer in the water bottle holder on their bikes. We took up a platoon collection for the kids go get us a couple racks of beer The little suckers came back EVERY TIME!! Never once absconded with our US dollars. Platoon Sgt. was smart, we got enough for 3-4 beers each, but not enough to cause problems. But then that one time in the Gasthouse, when Sgt Douchebag nearly got gutted by said Platoon Sgt. Don't mess with multi tour former 'Nam recon Marines Rollock!! circa @1981. ps WireCutter, new AR, another LaRue booger hook. Makes about 6 now, and I blame YOU!! Thank you by the way!!
