CDFW Investigates Possible Mountain Lion Attack In Trinity County

Wildlife officers from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) responded to a report of a mountain lion attack in Trinity County on May 16, 2022. The incident occurred approximately 3:00 p.m. along State Route 299 near Big Bar.

A woman was driving on State Route 299 when she stopped beside the road near a picnic area and exited the vehicle with her dog. She began walking down a path with the dog slightly ahead of her. She noticed movement beside her as a mountain lion swiped her across her left shoulder, causing injury. She screamed and her dog, a Belgian Malinois, immediately returned and engaged the mountain lion. The mountain lion bit the dog’s head and would not let go. The woman attempted to throw rocks, tug and pull them apart, and even attempted to gouge the eyes out of the lion, to no avail.

Like I told Elmo, you gotta give credit to the dog too for doing its job. And then there was the other person who went down and helped free the dog from the mountain lion's jaws.
Seriously, can you imagine driving down the road only to have some bloodied woman flag you down and ask, "Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to come down and give me a hand kicking this lion's ass?"

  1. I saw on the news this morning that the hero dog went home yesterday. She's still looking pretty rough, but she's home.

  2. Lab analysis for what?
Get out of the LAB(!), track that f#ck’n cat down and kill it:
Then you can poke and jack around all you want.
What a waste of time, money and resources. Lab analysis my a$$.
These government lice are professional money wasters.

    1. When I worked in the woods we had an expression for lack of positive action by the Forest Service: Paralysis by Analysis.

    2. Maybe its an endangered sabertooth mountain lion which needs protection? Got to analyze everything so as not to make an error. Woman or helper could have carried a concealed .44....except its Commiefornia--no guns alllowed.

    3. Not sure where you get your information from, but I owned more guns in California than I have here. Also, I'm pretty sure Trinity County is a shall issue county.

    4. If it isn't it ought to be. There's probably more critters that kill people in the county than there are people to kill.

  3. Definitely the right dog to have along in the event of a mountain lion attack.

  4. There's big cats all over the west coast, I've even seen a black jaguar on a busy road in the Cleveland National Forest in Southern California. It's just nature, these cats go all over the western U.S. and all over South America. As their natural habits are being destroyed, you will have more incounters with them, and everything else nature has to offer.

  6. I have a Mal... great dogs if you can give them the daily exercise to not go stir-crazy.

  7. While it's most likely a cat, we have several species locally that are often mistaken for animals. Hippyus Cannibus, Crakus Addictus, and Methus Hedus to name a few, are frequently confused with Bigfoot, bears, cats and even racoons (particularly when rummaging through garbage cans).

  9. Trinity County is shall issue; I've had my license for years, good for the whole state. Norcal (north of Sac) is a rural, right-wing agricultural state. It is NOT The Bay Area.

As for lions; I've had them on my property- we even have wolves now.
Laid flat, Trinity County is larger than Texas, with 13,000 people. Elk graze my acreage, and bears and eagles stop by too.

California is not what you see on TV, and we are not all lefty fruitcakes.

  10. That's right. A handgun would have changed that whole story.

  11. Its the time of year for new litters of kittens to be born. So last years kittens are looking for new territories. We just had one wander into the town I live in last week. So this one attacking a dog is no surprise. A better dog would have been a Dogo Argentino. The hunting strain not necessarily the show dog strain. They are bred to hunt Mountain Lions and Imported European Wild Boar.
