Must've been a slow night in Swanlinbar

An 88-year-old retired NYPD cop living out his golden years in Ireland was busted in a dragnet worthy of a Hollywood movie — for keeping an old, decommissioned revolver in his home.

The daring morning police raid was the largest in recent memory in the tiny village of Swanlinbar, County Cavan, population 200, when up to 10 armed officers in six vehicles descended on the picture-postcard hamlet.

  1. ...bet that wouldn't have happened during the modern "troubles". The IRA was ruthless. We could learn a thing or three from them.

Got my first awakening to irregular warfare before the IRA capitulated. I was at Heathrow back in the early 90's waiting for some other folks I was traveling with to arrive. An announcement came over the loud speakers warning to stay away from and report any unattended luggage. A couple days later they blew up a building in S. London.

I also read a rather large, long tome on the modern Troubles in the 2000's. I can't remember the title. Those guys didn't really care who they killed as long as English troops or Irish police officers, loyal to the Crown or the Irish .gov , died or were maimed in the attack.

...and for all of you three agency types that read this blog looking for white supremacists and insurrectionists, look elsewhere.

  2. No 2nd or 4th amendments in Ireland where only the IRA and Knackers have access to firearms. 20 years ago, when I was resent there, I had a friend who was a retired officer in the Defence Forces (Irish army). Somehow, he managed to keep his issued Glock 19 after he retired. A few years afterwards the Cops (Garda Siochana) who he knew well came knocking on his door. That was the end of his firearm right then and there. No warrants produced and no apologies offered.

  3. And the irony of it is incredible . He's a McGovern himself , born in Swanlinbar itself , in Cavan. His clan, his ancestors , ruled that Barony of Tullyhaw. Folks would have been rallying to his people WITH arms for the defense of the place when called! King and Country would have been reliant on his possession and use of arms.... he would be expected to be proficient.

    1. I he'd stayed in the US, most likely the rules _wouldn't_ have applied to him. I don't know for sure about New York, but most states allow retired cops to own and carry handguns concealed without a permit. (Since the crime rate drops with age, they're probably no more likely to commit crimes with their guns than the youngest "civilians" who went to the trouble of getting a CCL.) However, being a retired New York cop doesn't mean diddly-squat to most other nations. (Or if they've been watching the left-leaning news reports, they might even be especially concerned about American cops having guns...)
