The city came along and absolutely denuded every tree along the street where a friend lived. All that was left were the bare trunks. Every branch hacked off.
The trunks were left to continue to grow. The trees were some kinf of hardwood which are slow growing. Those trees were over 80 yrs old. Their canopy shaded the street which created a lovely scene. Of course, cities have their arborists. I wonder what that idiot was thinking.
Coppicing. I didn't know it was still a thing, but was used extensively before 1900 as a means of producing firewood. In about three years, the trunks should have produced a lot of smaller bushy branches which can be cut for firewood, and will grow back quickly. Maybe the city didn't want large branches which might fall, but an explanation first might have helped. John in Indy
We have some water maples and red oaks in the neighborhood that will eventually need taken down or should be now. The price to remove a tree is pretty steep so if the city was doing it I wouldn't complain. Daryl
