Tennessee grocery sales tax suspension soon to take effect

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Shoppers will soon pay less at the grocery store thanks to a new bill that passed along with Governor Bill Lee’s budget this week.

Governor Lee announced the passing of his 2022 budget, which includes a 30-day suspension on grocery sales tax.

I think our grocery sales tax is a whopping four percent. If he wanted to make a difference, he could suspend all of our sales tax, not just the grocery tax.

  2. I think food and clothing are the only two things the great state of do not tax.
sales tax is 6-7 % on everything else though. and still the roads in most of the state are shit.
one thing I will admit is they do a good job around here on the roads, even in winter the roads are in good shape compared to other areas of the state.
the other day diesel was 6.50 per gallon and gas is up another 20 cents to 4.39 per though.
heating oil is over 5 bucks now I hear. I have 2 full tanks myself, but rather use the 2 wood stoves as it better heat and a lot quieter too.
everything is going up in price because everything moves by truck or diesel in this country
if you want anything, you best get it soon as prices are not going down on anything here

  3. Well, with no TN state income tax, they probably won't eliminate any of the other sales taxes.

  5. In Michigan, they changed it long ago, took sales tax off of food, but raised sales tax on everything else from 4% to 6%. Food that you cook yourself, that is. At a restaurant, and certain types of ready to eat foods from the store, the tax is still there, at 6%.
The politicians know that no matter how onerous, the people will get used to just about anything.

  6. TN sales tax is 7.0%, up to 10% in somw jurisdictions. Food is untaxed unless prepared (like rotisserie chicken, sandwichs).

The tax rate is high enough to make a difference. But only for thirty days is laughable. That is an annualized .08%. Big whoop. But the Gov makes hay of it.

  7. I've never understood the rationale behind taxing a necessity like food. Why don't they just tax air too and be done with it.

  8. Why do governments still collect taxes? Since we went off the gold standard there isn't any reason to collect taxes. I can't think of any downside that they aren't already exploiting.

  9. Arizona only taxes prepared (restaurant, deli, etc) food. Build your own.
