Article says the bar was having a Friday night fish fry, which seems to be a tradition in the Great Lakes region. Back in the '80s, if I tuned my AM radio just right, I could pick up a guy named Bob Bauer at Canadian station CKLW in Windsor, Ontario (across from Detroit) who had a Friday night show of that name that had the greatest jazz and standards music this side of Jonathan Schwartz on WOR, New York.
If the strike is close enough, you can hear a "click" as the upward and downward leaders connect. Followed by an immediate BOOM! without any of that sissy KA- to give you a warning. Yeah, I coulda done without gaining that knowledge firsthand... Twice.
Lightning struck a bird bath 20 yards from my house when I lived in Houston. It caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage to electronic components in my house. The oddest thing was that my phone was ringing for a while after that (I later found out why) and my alarm siren was blaring until I went in the attic and ripped the wires out of the damned thing. All of the magnetic sensors in the alarm system lost their magnetism and the control board was completely fried, as were the control boards of the A/C units. Lost a bunch of other stuff as well. Our insurance company picked up most of the damages.
The wrath of Carrie Nation?
