California drives another business off

Meatpacking giant Smithfield Foods said Friday it will close its only California plant next year, citing the escalating cost of doing business in the state.

The Farmer John meatpacking plant in Vernon will shut down in February, with its 1,800 employees receiving severance and job placement support along with bonuses for those who choose to stay on the job until the closure, said Jim Monroe, vice president of corporate affairs.

  1. As I recall Smithfield is owned by the CCP so the only people who are going to lose out are the working stiffs , everyone else gets a nice fat bonus

    1. Yup. Who would have thought that California could become too commie for the communists?

  2. It's not just Califruitopia. Caterpillar just announced they're moving from Illinois, that Midwest Demonrat hell hole, home of Chicongo, to Texas.

"The idea that businesses are leaving California because of higher taxes and more regulation is a myth."

The result will most likely be higher pork prices and they've been artificially low for quite some time. I didn't know the commies had bagged another U.S. based company; they should be banned from ownership of American companies as well as banning them from our colleges and universities. I just finished reading "Red Handed" by Peter Schweizer and it's quite revealing about how the reds worm their way into our businesses and tech. Highly recommend.

  8. Drove by that place many times in the early 70s. It is a landmark in Socal. Besides the fact you could smell it a mile away, the truckers used to have to back in their trailers to the loading docks with their tractors at 90 degrees parked in the right hand lane of Soto St. Mad skills. You can still see what used to be the docks on Street View - Soto St. just north of Vernon Ave., Vernon, CA.

  9. The closing is also causing a significant portion of an entire county in Utah to lose their jobs. The largest employer in Beaver county (if I recall the right county) is the farms that raise many of the pigs processed there. They say it is 30% - 40% more expensive to operate in California than anywhere else. Utah is trying to piece together a deal to move the processing to Utah to save employment in that county.
