How Roof Koreans Took Back Los Angeles

At the start of the riots, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) offered next to no help to the Korean business owners, or indeed anyone caught in the fray and largely retreated from the situation as things slowly went from bad to worse. With no police force to protect people the city was at the brink, with both racial and economic issues taking the forefront.

And it was this according to Kim that was sparked it all “We saw the police didn’t care about our community, and was actually more interested in arresting us volunteer defenders (Roof Koreans) rather than looters and rioters, and running away during gun fights. We couldn’t rely on police, they were not there to protect us. They were there to protect wealthy white neighbourhoods while letting Koreatown burn”

And as the situation intensified it would be almost a week before the besieged business owners would see any form of law enforcement, so they set about defending themselves. Thus, the roof Koreans and the meme it created were born.

VIDEO HERE  (11:40 minutes and well worth the time to watch it)

  1. As one who survived being in LA at the time, he should have said "wealthy neighborhoods" and not "wealthy white neighborhoods." White had nothing to do with it. Whites were abandoned as much as everyone else was.

    1. I did, too. Drove with a gun in my lap to and from work for days. It was years before anyone outside L.A. knew about that vid. A friend worked for a contract lights and cameras co. for Hollyweird. He and a co-worker were offered a sum to stay with the equipment storage near ground zero. Instead, they took cams into the street and filmed and filmed and films. It was VHS days. Ex has my copies.

  2. Is anyone keeping score on the amount of times that police got a "stand down" order? Or even failed to "do their duty"?
I am not and I repeat NOT a conspiracy hack.....BUT, even my German brain is seeing a pattern of almost deliberate "not doing their job" in the police world. I for one have many police friends that I worked with during my EMT/Fire days. I respect all of them.....BUT, gees louise!!!!!! What is it with the mindless drone like attitude the boys in blue have these days. (and yes, I did say boys in blue...not going to get into my thoughts re: females in the service)
What will it take for my hippy-dippy beatnik sisters to realize that when they call 911; they may not get help until the blue shirts sort out where they stand on today's aggrieved cohort of society.

    1. I saw a meme that implied when Biden was asking "How many children need to die?" it was to know how many more of our kids he and the Democratic party have to kill before we give up our firearms. To paraphrase a well know saying, at some point gross incompetence is indistinguishable from conspiracy.

  3. I've actually never heard that story. Pretty incredible. They're all heroes in my book. I hope none were ever prosecuted...

  4. "Can't we all just get along" doesn't translate from Urbonics into Korean.

  5. (Old Tech) Honestly, many call them Roof Koreans or Rooftop Koreans - all I seen were Americans...... likely Texans. And a fine bunch as far as I am concerned.

  7. A personal story told to me by a LAFD captain: during the height of the riots, they were a "task force" racing around from fire to fire. They would knock it down and move on to the next. He noticed a group of Filipinos kept appearing with machetes and surrounding them. Finally losing it, he approached one and demanded, "Why are you threatening us?". The man replied, "We are not threatening you, we are protecting you.". The Captain then loaded them up on the engines and drove around with them to each fire.

  11. Those folks set a fine example of how to do it right . Much respect to them , and if things in my AO go south I hope that I am able to acquit myself as well as the Rooftop Korean Americans have .

  12. The police have NO LEGAL DUTY TO DEFEND YOU. It has been proven several times over in court, if you don't believe your own eyes.
Nobody will be coming to protect you against what is coming. The po po will be the ones doing the enforcement!
