How often does a ‘good guy with a gun’ end an attack?

A shooting at an Indiana mall Sunday that left three innocent people dead and two more injured could have been far worse if not for the actions of an armed civilian, authorities say.

Police are calling 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken a hero after they say he shot and killed the suspected 20-year-old gunman with a firearm he was legally carrying.

“Many more people would have died last night if not for a responsible, armed citizen that took action very quickly within the first two minutes of the shooting,” said Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison.

How common is it for civilians to stop active threats? Data from the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University suggests bystanders stop active attacks about 16% of the time, although typically without using a gun.

Shit, even if it was only one time, it justifies citizens carrying firearms in public places.
Apparently most people think like I do according to this:

  2. The thing these bastards never mention is that in almost all cases, the law abiding citizen obeyed the gun free zone sign, while in every case, the shooter ignored the sign.

  7. First 2 minutes of shooting?????? Acting like the cops COULD have done it had they been there!!! STFU!!!! The guy put him down in 15 SECONDS!!!!! From 30 yards away!!!!! While, possibly, ppl scrambling all over the place.

  8. It only makes sense if a good citizen is present with firepower and the willingness to use it, then mass shootings will become a thing of the past. The very idea of a perp getting shot will discourage most from even attempting it. Same with "gun-free" zones. That's just an invitation for someone with a death wish.

  9. When Gabby Gifford got shot in that Safeway parking lot, there were at least two people with permits carrying there. None of the took action. They interviewed them, asked them why they didn't draw their weapons and take action and the reply was the same. "Didn't want to get sued". The guy I go to for my renewals is an ex Sacramento Sheriff and he tells you that he would not draw his weapon an intercede unless it was a family member or someone he was close to. He's not the only instructor preaching that. Imagine how many "Good guys with guns" would take action if they gave us a little protection from the ass holes.

  10. 40 yards or 40 feet, to recognise what’s happening, draw and put the guy down in 15 seconds! is fucking amazing.
