The Most Vicious Heavyweight In History - Jack Dempsey
Jack Dempsey was the single most ferocious fighter the world had seen to that point. He took boxing from barely legal to the biggest sport in the US. He was completely incapable of not hitting hard.
Same here, didn't know that he had been a hobo, and that hard times had fueled his talent. Seems like a lot of these early fighters grew up on hard times to become top athletes because of drive, grit, and rage. Jake LaMotta is another one, Louis Zamperini another (Unbroken).
Just watched the Bronson movie Hard Times recently - pretty good Depression-era pic.
I am not a big boxer fan either however, I saw Rocky Marcino and Joe Lewis in an interview years ago. The interviewer said to Joe, Rocky really hits hard with his left doesn't he? Joe replied, Rocky Marcino hits you hard with both hands.
Jack was a great fighter and a brawler but he wasn't much of a boxer. That's why Tunney owned him; Tunney could actually box. As powerful and as aggressive as he was I don't think Dempsey would do well against the top fighters today simply because of his style. Tyson would have eaten him alive. So would Ali.
Interesting bit of history, thanks
ReplyDeleteYeah, I thought it was too. I'm not a boxing fan, but who hasn't heard of Jack Dempsey? I didn't know any of his back story, though.

DeleteI liked the interview with Tyson and Cassius Clay.
DeleteAn incredible boxer. Back when men were men for sure.

ReplyDeleteReminds me of the film IP Man 2.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't seen it you should.
Just brutal .
Makes me think the Charles Bronson as a street fighter in the movie Hard Times was based on Jack.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a cool story!
