Shotgun, rifle, and handgun that might have been somebody's first choice in 1975: Colt Government Model in .45 ACP, High Standard K-1200 12 gauge, and a World War II vintage M1 Carbine.
I inherited my Dad’s Model 10 in .38 special & Winchester Model 94 (pre-64) in 30-30 and my Granddad’s A-5 Browning (12 ga) at used at the local hardware store out of literally a barrel of them…. Served me well back in the day.
My set in 1976 was a Browning 9mm Hi Power, a Reminton 1100 gas-auto 12 gauge and a Winchester 30-06 bolt action that I inherited from my dad. I also had an M1 carbine for plinking. My stepfather was quite impressed that I could hit rabbits in the head with the 9mm.
1975 was prettty much the beginning of my own gun collection. I was 12 at the time so limited to Dad's discretion on what he thought appropriate. My three gun battery was a Ruger Super Single-Six 6 1/2" blued barrel, a Savage 94Y .410 single shot shotgun and Remington 600 .308 Winchester bolt action deer rifle. My 1st gun was an Marlin 81 tube fed .22lr. I still own them all, a lot of sentimental memories with them.
My memory was that we did not have as many choices as we do now. Looking at old Gun Digest catalogs really seem to bear that out. Much better than the 1960's though.
In the late '60s, 19 and take home was about $300 a month. All I had was a 25 cal Saturday night special. K-Mart was selling M-1 carbines for about $75 (still in Cosmoline) and I wanted one, however the wife was scared of guns and I couldn't afford one. Never did get one, but now I do have a M1A1 of 1943 vintage...a real pleasure to shoot.
Lots fewer choices back then. Selling guns was simple. Colt, Smith or Browning.
ReplyDeleteForeign shit was just that.

My set was a Mossberg .243, a Mossberg 500 20ga, and an RG-14 .22 revolver. Upgraded to a S&W 59 in 1985. Still have the .243 and the 59.

ReplyDeleteNo problem with any of the arms, then or now. I've always coveted a Rock-Ola M1 Carbine. Now DANCE, motherfucker!
