There's nothing better than being outdoors by a warm campfire and cooking up a tasty meal. In addition to a campfire, we fire up the camp chef and the rocket stove and share a few simple camping meals all cooked in our favorite cookware, cast iron.

Thank you wirecutter. Got me in the mood to fire up the BBQ this evening.
ReplyDeleteYears ago, I used to love creating somewhat elaborate camp meals that involved all manner of methods. From cast iron pans and dutch ovens to burying stuff in coals with hot rocks and making breakfast biscuits inside orange rinds. One of my bibles (besides my 1965 Boy Scout Handbook) was a book called "Roughing it Easy". I loved that stuff and my family was always pretty impressed, even with the failures, and there were several of those. These days I have a brand x butane single burner stove and a Weber Smokey Joe that I use for most things since when I camp now the only person I need to impress is me. Just got back from a 10 day stay at Lake Carmi in Vermont in fact.
ReplyDeleteThat's about like my camping/backpacking arc:
DeleteScouting years: wood fires, shelter halves, map & compass, fishing >
Coleman stoves, pop tents >
Truck camping: Ice chest, beer, sleep warm & dry in the camper >
Current mode- solo dry camping in AWD van, awning, lounge chair, full size bed, single burner butane stove. Cell phone, GPS (backed up w/ Delorme maps & compass.)
Man, them philly's....
ReplyDeleteProper baking requires precise measuring. Cracked me up when he dumped in a third of a can of baking powder/soda/whatever.
