A new study has determined that “Luna” is the most popular name for dogs in a whopping 35 states. Nationally — and not surprisingly — Luna was also the most common name for dogs in general, followed by Bella, Max, Cooper and Daisy, according to the findings.

Luna? I've never heard of a single dog named Luna. Who names a dog Luna, anyway? Sounds like a fucking New Age or hippie name to me.
All those people naming their dog Luna..... reminds me of about 40 years ago when Brandon and Brett were real popular names for baby boys in the Central Valley. I personally knew of 3 different couples that had boys named Brandon or Brett.
That's some Harry Potter influence, I think. One of the popular characters in that was named Luna.
ReplyDeleteI had a French girlfriend who took in a stray and named her Luna, this was 17 or 18 years ago now; it was one of the last events on our relationship.
ReplyDeleteMy belief is that things take on character as they are named, so it's important to have good names. Don't name your dog after a trickster god, for instance, or the root word of "lunacy."
Luna is moon in Spanish... and still why would anybody name a dog Luna?

ReplyDeleteIn January I had to put down our Jack Russell. She was old, and had gotten sick and stopped eating. It broke my heart and left a HUGE hole. Then in May, I saw an ad for a german shepherd. His previous owner had passed away and his son had to rehome the dog. On our first meeting, the dog tried to tear my arm off. But, with a touch of patience, and once he had sniffed me and ID'd me, he suddenly turned into this 95 pound playful puppy as long as you avoid the snarly, bitey end. His previous owner had named him "K.O" (I'll let you figure out why). I didn't have the heart to change his name, so, K.O. it is. He also answers to Lummox, Lard Butt, Kujo, and Hazard to Navigation. He really is a sweetheart of a dog except for his propensity for stepping on people's feet.
ReplyDeleteWe have a Heifer we named Luna. The first night on the hillside, as the full moon was rising, her white face was glowing with the light. It was all you could see up in the pasture. Kinda spooky at first.

ReplyDeleteThat doesn't sound right, we need to read that study. I'm sure there are dogs named Luna somewhere, but how can it be the most popular name in 35 states? I know tons of people with dogs, and Luna doesn't even sound like a dog's name.
ReplyDeleteYep. Have a neighbor with a dog named Luna from the Harry Potter series of books. I can't remember the 2nd dog's name, but it is another character from the books.

ReplyDeleteMet my first "Luna" a month ago in some shopping mall when she came up to say hello. Gorgeous blue-eyed husky going about with a Filipina in her 30's and a Black guy in his 40's or early 50's. They had good manners and were very fit and athletic looking, though the guy was in a leg cast. Yes, that's extraneous info I guess. Just two data points about what kinds of people call their dog "Luna".

ReplyDeleteMuggs, Chimp, named after 50's TV monkeys, Flash, Zack (Ringo's son) all named by my mother. Dusty and Frankie (family dog name Franklin if male). Frankie is probably our last dog. Her expiration date is probably the same as mine.

ReplyDeleteMy first rescue Dane was named Luna. She turned out to be the best dog l ever had. I cried like a baby when she died, I held her until she was gone. No I see where another couple needs to regime their 5 year old Dane. Just don’t want her anymore. People who let their dogs go after 5 years I don’t understand.
