Rule #1 - Never walk behind a running helicopter

A young British tourist has been killed in a horrific accident which saw his body chopped to pieces by a helicopter blade at a Greek helipad.

The 21-year-old male, who has not yet been identified, was exiting the aircraft at the private airport yesterday evening along with three friends, following a flight from Mykonos to Athens.

Sorry, but they guy is a Darwin Candidate Finalist. How stupid can you be? The gene pool is just a bit more clean today than it was before.

  3. I own an airplane. You'd be surprised how many people fail to respect a turning prop.

Once I shut down the engines when a young couple let their kids run towards my airplane.

    People are stupid sometimes.

  4. I read somewhere else that he was trying to take a selfie. Oh that all important selfie. Wondering if he succeeded.

    1. Thank you, I had wondered.
Guess he'd never heard of situational awareness.

  5. Some news sources have indicated he was either attempting a “selfie,” or talking on his phone when he got the chop. If so, reinforces the Darwin Award candidacy. I saw a post somewhere that said, “RIP-rest in pieces”.

  6. If the pilot did not brief his passengers how to exit the aircraft, this is on him.
If the pilot did but the passenger forgot or ignored, it is on the passenger.
Still, the pilot has responsibility to ensure the safety of his passengers.
As long as passengers arre on the ramp, the pilot or designated person has responsibility.

  7. I read about this a few days ago. What I read was another selfie "accident", where he walked back to the chopper to take the photo. Darwin wins again.

  8. "Police sources did not reveal the family involved but it is understood they are extremely wealthy"
"The pilot has been arrested on manslaughter charges" and "[police] are believed to be probing the pilot who landed the chopper as to why the passengers were allowed to exit the aircraft with the rotors still spinning."
[There was a second, following helo] "Sources said the 115-mile trip in two helicopters would have cost more than £15,000."

Well, that pilot's fucked. Why didn't he stop the passengers from exiting? How do you stop some rich young kid from doing anything? (Short of violence, which would also have got him in trouble. The only person who can pull the reins on those sorts is Daddy Warbucks who threatens to cut off his allowance and then leave his hedge fund to someone else.)

  9. I don't think the pilot should have been arrested. No one is expected to take responsibility for their own stupidity any more.

  10. Was he wearing a mask and was he vaccinated? If so, is he less dead?

  11. My wife was a corporate executive of an executive helicopter transport company on the east coast. Lot's of really wealthy clients. It's impossible to understate the arrogance of most those people. The adult children of the wealthy were the worst. Heavy odds the pilot said stay in the aircraft until the rotors stop, and the Darwin award winner said, you can't tell me what to do.

    1. I've worked with a lot of very wealthy people and this post is dead on accurate. Biggest assholes on earth. And the idiot wealthy parents made sure the pilot & crew were arrested even if they were 100% not at fault. "Laws" are for us slaves, they basically have little to none.

  12. I read a story where the operator of a radio controlled helicopter ran it into himself and lopped off top part of his head.

    1. Yeah, that would be Roman Pirozek. He was one of the best RC heli pilots ever. Not as good as he thought though!

This isn't him (I don't think), but this is the type of shit they do. Pretty crazy.

  13. I worked 'ramp' for a Tourist Helicopter company here in Hawaii & they flew McDonnell Douglas 500 (Little Bird in Vietnam). My ramp personnel would stand behind the rear doors to keep the tourist from exiting & running into the tail rotor. Hawaii has had an 'accident' where visitors (Japanese) ran into the tail rotor but not on my watch. The MD 500 'NOTAR' has no tail rotor so dummies can not run into anything but anti torque wash. Must be a heavy way to see a person 'maki'. I mention the Japanese as we had to keep an eye on them as they love to run when given a chance on the ramp.

  16. One of our slick aircraft commanders had a ROK, Capital ROK/Tiger Division, trooper run into his tail rotor in a LZ. He brought the deceased trooper's helmet back, it had a hand depth dent in it but didn't crack. Dropped the ROK dead as a stone where he ran into the t/r. regards, Alemaster
