and before the politicians started legislating CAFE. Lots of other do-gooders who know what's best for somebody else. Not to mention consumers who'd rather pay $200 for every oil change rather than $100 once in the price to get a filter in a place you can reach. It ain't always the bean counters!
A few years ago there was a Renault car that needed partly dismantling to change a bulb in the headlight unit. Half a day's work if you did it yourself, garages were charging several hundred pounds to do the job. We went shopping for a used car at a pretty big car dealer and their lot was full of the things. It seems that people were learning the hard way and then trading the things in.
I have a toyota and the windshield wiper is $60 a pair! ($82 from the dealer or $60 from AutoZone) Toyota made a special fitting so only toyota blades would fit. I told the shop that I will tie a rag to a stick or trade the car before I spend $30 for a wiper blade. I bought a set from the junkyard for $10 after 2 years.
thankfully a chinese company is making them now and I bought a set off eBay . $14 a pair. still too high but closer to reality.
Stop short for that extra impact.
