Got an Air Nat'l Guard Blackhawk courtesy ride (aircrew said they needed ballast) when we were at Eielson AFB in Fairbanks. 2000' or so, doors open, *nothing* to see except flat tundra and pine trees. Then out the left door, the pipeline stretching off to the horizon. Look to the right, same thing. Those were tough old birds to accomplish that.
Sorry, my conscience dictates I should forewarn Cheechakos, Greenhorns and sundry Ne’er-do wells, the Liard bears are notorious for gnawing on humans and killing some. Public service announcement: buyer beware.
Pony motors, cable operating everything with no hydraulic's in those days. Took a man to run em all day long. I've worked in the woods at forty-five below but nothing like what those fellas experienced or with the equipment they had. As the film said, Spring or what we called Mud Season, nothing moved.
People can still do great things like the Al-Can; 1) if they they are taught they can do ANYTHING as children, and 2) the goddamn government gets outta the way. JFM

ReplyDeleteTwo places to stop and relax. Muncho Lake and Liard Hot Springs are a must.
