Your Feel-Good Story of the Day

Devastating debris flows in San Bernardino County destroyed homes, uprooted families and left at least one person dead this week.

But on Friday, search and rescue volunteers were able to report a glimmer of good news.

  1. It does make a person feel good, no doubt.

  2. People tend to discount the San Bernardino Mountains since they are so close to the LA Basin. I went to high school with a guy who lived up in that area. He made pretty good money during the winter shoveling roof tops clear of snow. Later I had a another friend who mis stepped hiking above that area one winter. It was 1000 feet before that chute tapered out.

  3. I grew up during my teen years hiking, biking, exploring the San Bernardino Mts., from Azusa Canyon (Hwy 39) to Cucamonga Canyon, Mt. Baldy, and through to Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear... dang, sadly it was all slowly ruined. Hwy. 39 used to go all the way to Crystal Lake and Hwy 2 - the Angeles Crest.
Hard to explain, but if you can relate - the 'escape' from the city for a while was such a great time...

    1. Used to camp overnight in Azusa Cyn. Back in the late 70's - most of the time, no one else around. Pretty rocky, but sandy spots could be found.
It was once designated for shooting in some areas ; Clarks grade around Angelus Oaks in SBNF,. and the old "Horse Trail" public shooting area near Wrightwood; all gone now.
