How sad is this?

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. - A Florida father is facing a manslaughter charge after deputies say he shot and killed his 19-year-old son when he mistook him for a burglar.

  1. Facially, yes, horribly sad. Something few of us could ever recover from.

Factually, I think something else was going on. The father had made a false complaint earlier, as if he may have been setting the stage for him to think it was one of the same intruders. The father was already being detained on 'unrelated charges'...

Something doesn't smell right to me here, and I'm not even a cop.

  2. Know your target and what’s beyond! There have been several tragedies like this. One sticks out. A guy’s daughter thought she’d surprise her dad and her mother by coming home from college right after her last final, rather than a couple of days later as originally planned. She arrived home at midnight, and used her key to let herself in. Her dad heard noise downstairs and ended up shooting her as she was roaming around the house in the dark.

So make sure that you know with certainty what you are shooting at whether you think it’s a burglar in the house or a deer in the field. In other words, see before you pull the trigger.

  3. Ditto the tragedy. I recall a father/son in town for a hockey tournament, son went to get a bucket of ice at 2 am, Dad thought he was an intruder, blam blam blam...
The judge was kind enough not to press charges in this case however. Man suffered enough.
