No shit?

NEW YORK - Almost like everything else, you can expect to pay more this winter to keep your home warm.

Due to the global energy crisis and inflation, nearly every American will be paying more to heat their home this year, whether they use oil or natural gas.

*****

It cost me more to cool my house this past summer, so why wouldn't I expect it to cost more to heat it this winter?

  1. The man is here right now servicing the heat pump. I want it as efficent as it can be. All new storm doors and windows will soon be replaced. I'm sure there are other opinions but many engineers today no longer put vents in a crawl space type foundation. They claim if you have them seal them up. I did plus I laid 6 ply plastic. I've kept my eye on it and it is dry as a bone under there. No mold any where. Prior to doing this it was always damp and I had a bit of mold. A solution of water and chlorox took care of that.

    1. Please don't use bleach on mold, it could cause an unpleasant reaction. Use simple green cleaner, that's a direct tip from an mold remediation pro that I've used to great effects.

    2. Scruff, Nicely put and I'll give simple green a try. We do use it a lot for other things. One is never to old to learn new things. There is a guy in here that likes to say nasty things to people. I don't like that much. That is why I say nicely put. Thanks.

    3. Okay, I apologize for saying nasty things to people.

    4. Yer site you can say what cha want. When you do intervene or put someone in their place I've always been in agreement. You are the conductor and I enjoy how you maintain the flow. I like what the folks have to say in here. However, I wasn't referring to you.

    7. We had a severe mold problem in our attic a decade ago, I sprayed simple green with an airless sprayer and scrubbed with a brush. Problem gone and never returned.

  2. $4.30 a gallon for heating oil if I haul it myself, who knows how much more if I get it delivered. 500 gallon tank + Interior Alaska winter = I’m burning wood. The Fairbanks North Star Borough Air Quality Division can kiss my ass.

  3. Add heating with wood to that "more expensive" list. I've seen kiln-dried firewood jump from $305/cord delivered to $350/cord. The more traditional 'solar-dried' firewood is going for $300/cord delivered when last year it was $255/cord.

My woodstove is being installed next week, I have about 1-1/2 cords of dry firewood stored away which should be enough to heat my home (<1000 sqft) all winter. It will be a heck of a lot cheaper to heat with wood (even at kiln-dried prices) than with oil, natural gas, or propane up this way (NH).

    1. It seems price of firewood has kept pace with inflation.

In the late 1970s I had a firewood business. I had rights to all the windfall on an oak-studded 25,000 acre ranch.
I charged $230/cord split and delivered. To stack was an additional $25 - $50.

  4. "global energy crisis" my ass.
    Transport/control crisis, absolutely.
    And an avalanche of propaganda.

  5. I've recently switched from trucking groceries to trucking liquid fuel. Word from an insider, get on automatic delivery now. They will be serviced before call to order customers if or when supplies are limited.

  6. Just a day after I ranted here about heating oil, you post this. I shot my wad yesterday.

Just know that on 3/20, I paid $1.77/gal. Now, we're at $5.10. For a 275 gallon tank that we go through every 4-6 weeks - depending on the weather - we're spending in a cold spell close to $300/week to heat our house!

We're not even that far North. I'm 30 miles outside of Philly!

    1. I had scheduled that post a few hours before I saw your comment. I don't think this is the first post I've done on home heating fuel costs, though. Not many, but one or two.

  7. I filled my buried porpane tank this summer. I only run the cook stove and whole house gen off it. Primay heat a/c is electric heat pump. Got a split system in the back that I can close up and shut off. Also, filled the 250 gal diesel tank. If it gets too bad at least I can drive to town on the tractor.

  8. Typically, the RV parks across the South West are seasonally filled with them flying south for the winter. At spring, they go home.

For the past 20 months, that has changed. Even those who can well afford it are not going back north. Significant price increases have kept them in the south. This has added to the housing shortage, especially for transient workers; everyone from the traveling nurses to the electricians and steamfitters and road crews and RR crews, and others.

Companies are now paying premium prices for short term rentals for their workers sent out into the field. Some transient workers are not even bothering to bring their travel trailers since there is no place with hook-ups.

  9. My analysis of the situation is this: Many people around the world will needlessly freeze and/or starve to death this Winter.
    You go Brandon!

  10. "It cost me more to cool my house this past summer"

Yep, mine too, over double. My typical cooling costs in the past have been ~$120.00/mth. This year my highest bill was +$260.00. With a SSW facing residence, I get direct sun for a good portion of the day.

Electric rates here jumped due to no domestic electricity being produced in-state after the electric co's shut down ALL of the in-state electricity generation WITH THE APPROVAL OF OUR RINO GOVERNOR. Yet he's standing for re-election and will probably win as his Demonrat opponent is an even more of a complete zero than he is.

Oh, and that projected 8.7% increase in SSI payments is already GONE.
