At least they didn't bill him for their fuck-up

LOS ANGELES — A South Los Angeles man whose cache of illegal fireworks blew up a neighborhood in a bungled police bomb squad detonation, injuring 17 people and displacing dozens, was sentenced Wednesday to five months in federal prison.

  1. Still having a hard time with that story.
Fireworks are made with black powder. A constant pressure propellant, of low brisance force.
Any “chamber designed for moderate (dynamite) explosives should have not “Grenaded” like that.

  2. He "underestimated"?
Sounds more like he didn't know what the fu@k he was doing.
The technician should get more time in prison than the guy smuggling in fireworks.

    1. 16 tons and what do you get. Another day older and 5 months deeper in the slammer.

  4. Note to LAPD. Never exceed a device's safe handling capacity by over 20% and not expect some sort of negative result.

I'm still ticked off about this. That was one beautiful truck they obliterated because of the fact that they were either idiots, had exceedingly high levels of testosterone, had egos that allowed them to think they could get away with it, can't do simple math or all four.

    1. Elmo, there's no 'either' there. They had all three characteristics in abundance.
These are big city cops, they feed off each other and they cannot do anything wrong.

    1. Just another "tool in the toolbox".
So what if it costs several hundred thousand dollars and had polished aluminum wheels (optional at extra cost)? If they blow it up they'll just cry the blues at the next city council meeting (think Kevin DeLeon) and they'll happily increase their budget so they can replace it. No biggie.

Reminds me of the retired Sheriff of Los Angeles County. He was bugged by the fact that some of his deputy's 'jewelry' was silver and some was gold. So he cried the blues to the county supervisors and they gave his department over $300,000 so the department could 'exude the command presence' the Sheriff wanted.

L.A. is a cesspool in more ways than one.

  6. Wait, if that's what I'm thinking of, it wasn't exactly his cache of fireworks that did the damage. It was the incompetent actions of city employees.

  7. Federal charges for smuggling fireworks in violation of state law? There's something not being explained here.

    1. That being California, I'm sure the explosives were smuggled over the international border from Mexico. There's your Federal charges.
