#10- I wonder how many of today's big ships are as clean as an operating room below decks. A far cry from the days of the dark, stinking, sweaty days of the steam and early diesel freighters that my Dad made his living on.
#10, that's a short clip of a longer video of the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) losing their anchor. Scary to watch the whole thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7pRfix_sNg
I am certainly no large naval ship expert, but I would have to guess that an Aircraft Carrier would have to use several anchors, not just a single one. Wow, I was correct, I did a quick Google search, and they have 2. Each anchor weighs 30 tons, with each link weighing 360 pounds. My son is a former Navy sailor, a 2nd class Petty Officer, and I will be calling him tonight, to wish him a Happy Veterans Day. And I wish the others here that served out nation in the military the same. Along with a very humble thank you. No matter how you served, and no matter your contribution may seem to be insignificant, the fact is, you are all heroes, and part of the reason that we still remain the greatest nation on earth.
Big Ship, maybe a Carrier
ReplyDeleteStacey Abram's emergency brake.
DeleteThey are in the middle of the ocean and don't have enough chain. I saw it paying out last night, and its still paying out at noon today.

ReplyDeleteFooled you! There IS no anchor... that's the ship's engine's timing chain!
DeleteYou stopped watching too early, at about 23:44 the chain broke and took out the dude.

ReplyDeleteNope, not the same, but it was interesting nonetheless. I guess the brake failed and the chain just kept on coming.
