I think there may be better meds than phenobarbital for dogs with seizues. I had my dog on meds many years ago and I cannot remember the name. However, that was the eighties so I'm sure there are better meds now. Phenobarbital can cause an exaggerated growth of the gums with long term use. It seems the stuff I used was a potassium. The phenobarbital, with my dog, did not work well. The second med we tried did a great job. I well remember laying with my pup talking to her and holding her feeling helpless. Bless you for being there for your pup.
Many thanks. When she had her first grand mal, I had no clue what to make of it, and it scared the piss out of me, my wife and our kids. It was in the middle of the night, and we thankfully live in a college town with a vet teaching hospital. She spent the night in the ICU, and we had a consult with a veterinary neurologist the next morning with the diagnosis being idiomatic epilepsy. Phenobarbital was the first course of action, and we were told if she has more than three break-through seizures in a 24-hour period to bring her in. We’ll be adding sodium bromide to the phenobarbital. Unlike the phenobarbital that we have to coat on peanut butter, the sodium bromide is liver flavored.
Happy dog!
ReplyDeleteI’m up with mine this morning, post-seizure. She’s been having break-through seizures, and I think we need to up her phenobarbital dose.
Aw, that sucks. Legal Lucy had seizures right before I had to put her down. They were more stressful on me than her.

DeleteMusta just sat on the rake.
ReplyDeleteEven while having a seizure, mine would take the phenobarbital with a little tiny bit of peanut butter licked off a finger. You might try that.
