Never been a fan after they canceled their concert at the last minute in Germany. The manager came out on stage after Brand X and Leo Kottke played their sets and said Grace Slick was sick(drunk on her ass) and they wouldn't be playing. It was at Lori Lei on the Rhine, big outdoor amphitheater on the Rhine River. Bunch of drunk soldiers and German roughnecks started a riot over it.
The roof over the stage got torched and a bunch of equipment and instruments were destroyed or stolen. The Polizei came in and if you got in their way, would kick you down and walk right over you, using your chest and face as stepping stones. It made the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Over a million bucks worth of destruction. I still have the ticket stub somewhere.
After that concert is when they banned glass bottles inside the venues.
Surrealistic Pillow, 1967, their first album, and arguably their best. Saw them in Seattle in 1970 when I was in Basic. Great concert.
I met them briefly in Chicago the summer of 1965. Gracie Slick was friends with my girlfriend's roommate. I was horrified they were smoking pot. I didn't discover it myself until 1967. Ah, college days....
Lyndon Freaking Johnson was president. Woodstock was 1969.
I still have the vinyl album, and still have these songs on my phone today.
