Your Tuesday Morning Florida Report

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. – Remains of six human bodies were unearthed Thursday along Chastain Beach after Hurricane Nicole tore through the east coast of Florida, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said a beachgoer discovered the remains, which are believed to belong to Native Americans — potentially centuries old.

  1. Geez, it's like the place was built on a giant Indian burial ground.... oh wait.

  2. I don't get the sacred burial ground shit. I mean if it's a knownsite sure. But somebody digging and finds bones that no one knew about and they lable it sacred ground and stop the project I think bullshit. I would agree, bury them elsewhere but that's about it. Hell go dig in Europe and I'll bet ya dig up all sorts of bones from the two World Wars. It seems they find ancient bones/mummies in the bogs of England. They don't shut the bog down and lable it a scared site. Why only the American Natives?

    1. Well, I don't get the 'sacred' part either, but the graves might have archeological value.
Back in 1976-77, they found a couple Indian graves on the Alabama side of Fort Benning when they were (I think) expanding a training area. They shut the site down and brought in some historians and archeologists and come to find out there was an entire village in that area.

    2. An archeological dig I'm all for. History is a love of mine and should be preserved. But for a hunk of land to be labeled forever sacred, never to be used cuz they found a couple graves, I don't support. I say, move them too an already established scared spot.

  4. They just found 14 sets of remains in Camden SC at a revolutionary war site, some buried less than six inches underground.

  5. In NC while digging for miniballs we'd find finger bones which we thought were pig bones. Our neighbor Johnny Summerville found an entact human tibia. We didn't care, we weren't after bones.

The sandbox at school held knuckle bones, shark teeth, and the ocassional miniball.

On the CA coast a much disputed hotel had finally been approved to be built. One of the conditions was to employ a representative of the local indian tribe plus an archeologist. Right away they began finding human bones.

It turned out the tribe rep was involved in salting the building site with bones and pottery. It was further discovered they came from a history museum which was involved in an archeological dig hundreds of miles away.

    1. In the ghost town of Bodie CA, you used to be able to walk the main road and find teeth and finger bones. It took me a while to figure it out, but what happened was they cut a road right through Boot Hill and spread the dirt, teeth, small bones and bone fragments over the main street.
I've still got 3-4 of the finger bones in my curio cabinet.
