How long do electric cars last?

Electric cars have surged in popularity due to high gas prices and the emergence of new all-electric vehicles across all major vehicle types. Because electric cars are a relatively new technology, prospective buyers may be curious about how long they can expect these cars to last. 

From battery life to expected length of ownership for popular electric cars, we answer the question of how long you can expect EVs to remain on the road.

So they figure that you'll get about 134,000 miles from a Tesla, then it could cost up to $20,000 to replace the battery packs.
I had a new engine put in my 2001 Ford F-150 last January at 200,000 miles at a cost of 8500 bucks, installed. At the rate I drive it, considering I didn't have the first 3000 mile oil change done until a couple months ago, it'll last me the rest of my life. Plus I don't have to worry about finding a charger, there's gas stations everywhere.

    I've been wondering if the next attack on our freedom of movement would target the gas stations. There are so many regulations that apply to them, nearly all of which can be interpreted variably, that forcing the majority of them out of business would not be a difficult project. Stay alert!

  3. There are gas stations everywhere ... Now. The Leftist idiots are working to change that already. They're great at circular reasoning, ICE vehicles are going away since the oil will run out and climate change, so we should ban new or relicensing gas stations now.

      It's only a matter of time until the CAGov stops renewing gas station permits, they're that stupid.
      I was disappointed in the article you linked that they didn't even talk about Hybrids. I saw a different piece recently showing the top ten used cars...my Prius was among them with a expected remaining life of 213,000 miles. My Prius Plug-In is just shy of 100k right now, so looks like I'll never need to buy another car! Yippie!

  4. If the power grid goes down and you have natural gas or propane you can upgrade your generator to a duel fuel carb for fairly inexpensive.

  5. My Toyota Tacoma pick up truck has 130,000 miles on it. My mechanic says that I can expect between 250,000 and 300,000 miles. I'd say that for a $30,000 price tag, that ain't too bad.

    2. I gave my Toyota Tacoma to my son when it had 150,000 miles on it and got a 2009 Tundra which now has 180000 miles, runs great, and is still worth about $20000.

  7. used to work with a guy who owned a Toyota ev and he used to brag about how little he spent on gas per month. like 12-18 bucks. But when it was like 2 years old, he had to replace
    2 of the batteries for 4 grand it was, I think. he sold in inside of a year as he did not want to pay for the next 4 batteries to go. he has not bought another one. and that was over 10 years ago.

  9. Oil won't be running out for a loooooong time. If democRATz get their way, and we somehow get off of fossil fuels (which I don't believe will be happening soon) all that's going to happen is that our resources get sold to China and the Third world happily continues to thrive and pollute while we get weaker.

    1. I really don't have one. I do think with tighter tolerances in newer engines synthetic may be the way to go, but I honestly don't know for sure.
      I've always burned regular oil in my vehicles. I've got synthetic oil in my truck now because that's what they put in it per the manufacturer's recommendations. When I had my oil changed I had my shop go with synthetic because I don't want them to not honor the warranty over some nitpicking shit in case something goes wrong. I'm also changing it every 3000 miles instead of my usual 5000-7500 mile interval for the same reason.
      The Japvan is also running synthetic only because that was what was in it when I bought it from the in-laws.

    2. I have an opinion, if I may.
      I wouldn't pay extra for synthetic when a high-quality oil, with proper oil changes, can't be beat. I've changed rod and main bearings on a Cummins motor that ran nothing but Chevron Delo after a half a million miles and the bearings looked just like new. I was tempted to put them back in again, but I didn't.
      But it also makes a difference how you drive. If you keep your foot out of it and drive it like a (Caucasian) man that helps an engine as much or more than the maintenance schedule you keep.

      Dirty little secret- engine manufacturers have been recommending synthetic lower viscosity oils not because they protect engines better but because they improve fuel mileage slightly, which pleases their government masters. That makes zero sense to me. I want an oil that's going to help me run my engine as long as possible, not one that gets me an extra of couple of miles out of a tank of fuel.

      But like Ken says, I'd run synthetic if doing otherwise would void a warranty or if I had an older rig that had only run synthetic before. But if I was starting from scratch I'd run a good conventional oil.
      I love Delo. I've been running it for 55 years now.

      That's my story and I'm sticking to it. But then, what do I know. I'm a dinosaur.

      I'll hazard a guess at the answer to your question.
      I would guess that synthetic oils are made from chemicals derived from oil.

    5. My dad just had a water pump replaced in a 14 Ford Taurus. Typical engineering stupidity requiring removal of front cover, timing chains and pump. Replaced chain and tensioner as well as pump to the tune of $1700. Dad has used synthetic since he bought it new. Mechanic stated he had been indifferent to somewhat negative toward synthetic oils, more money for what he thought was no benefit really. He was surprised enough with the condition of my dads internals he took photos of them o show dad noting that the motor still had hand writing on the ends of the cam sprockets and there wasn’t any wear visible with 140k on the odo. Don’t know what they use to write on engine parts but imagine it’s more than a sharpie. I’ve used synthetic in my 6.0 diesel and our Expedition specifies it but our other vehicles get the cheap stuff. My dads car however made his mechanic admit he may have to change his opinion on synthetics.

    1. The wife's F-150 2013 had to go to the local Ford shop for some kind of trans recall reprogramming.
      When she picked it up, they told her that there was a bad oil leak at the valve covers and oil pan that needed to be taken care of before the engine melted... for $1600.
      I took it to another chain dealer for her free oil change and asked if they saw anything that needed help- nope, except for the usual oil seep around the valve cover and oil pan.
      Then I told them about Griffith Ford.

  13. 2 of the 3 vehicles at my house (not counting motorcycles) have well over 100,000 miles and still running strong on the original engine. Although I'd like to replace my daily driver (just to get more tow capacity), my budget is leaning heavily on me driving it another 5 to 10 years (it's already 10 years old). Gone are the days of getting a new car every 4 to 5 years. Any vehicle I buy now better damn well last me 15 to 20 years and get a good quarter-million miles on it. And we're considered upper middle class. Fuck Joe Biden.

  15. A lot of lying (as usual) from the left about how EV's are green. All it really does is "export" the pollution since it still mostly takes fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal) to create the energy (electricity) and EV's have a ton of carbon footprint overseas where they mine for the metals for the batteries.

    Last I studied this, takes about 80K miles for an EV to start to be less of a pollution contributor compared to a gas/diesel car BUT, throw in having to buy new batteries (which manufacturing them is is the main carbon footprint) and now I think you're back to an EV not be any better overall for the environment.

  17. I've got 305,000+ on my 94 Ford (go ahead and laugh) with a five speed and the extra pedal on the left side. Yeah, its one of the original Powerstrokes without the OBDII. It smokes a little on cold mornings, but still passes smog check easily. Fully expect to get another 200,000 out of it driving easy and changing the oil. My '54 Willys M38A1 didn't do so well - I had to replace engine two years ago at 85,000 (or so the frozen speed/odometer claimed) from what appeared to be old age - but might have been lack of lead in the fuel. I'm pretty sure both will outlast me.

    1. I'm not laughing. You have a fine pickup that happens to be one of the best looking body styles Ford ever made.
      There's fancier running gear nowadays than a PowerStroke and a 5 speed but who needs fancy when you've got dependable?
      I had an '87 (ugly) F-250 with a 5 speed and diesel that I put an ATS turbo on. If it hadn't have burned up in a wildfire I'd probably still have it.

  18. The writer(s) of that article must live over in fantasy land. Series hybrids with no battery or a very small one are the future. Parallel hybride with two complete drive drains are beyond stupid. Large trucks will always be internal compustion.

  20. Twice before electric cars were popular. The first time was was about 100 years ago. The additional weight of the batteries and non-existent safety features made a wreck lethal so they did not catch on. Fast forward to the 70's and there was a two seater that was a dog performance wise and the lead acid batteries were expensive and only lasted a couple of years. At the rate the electric cars are being produced America is going to have a huge power grid problem very soon.

    Ford has the problem that 70% of its dealers want nothing to do with electric cars. To get a dealership able to support electric cars cost over a million dollars. The specialized training of technicians, specialized tools, charging stations, and base repair inventory run the price tag up quickly.

  23. Surprise but your synthetic oil is made from natural gas . The best rated by petroleum engineers is Pennzoil full synthetic . My new Kia Rio 5 door Hatchback uses 0W20 and gets 50 some mpg's before Slo Joe added more ethanol to the fuel . Now after the ethanol boost it is down to the low 40's .
